Complete LOTR "One Ring Edition" translated as "lets waste money and don't tell the wife edition" fitting lots of parts, mods, rubbers, and cleaning

HAve no fuses :(

Diode is def f***ked

Coil attached to diode?

Emergency order from Pinball heaven a full set of fuses and a new coil, I don't trust the one that I fitted incorrectly....

:(

The other thing to be very careful of with LOTR is the backbox where the ring magnets in when lifting and lowering the playfield.

Earlier in the build when lifting the playfield I somehow got the back caught and bent the brackets holding the back to the playfield, was very upset as it was after I had just rebuilt the thing, bought some new brackets so damage done, but now I'm super consious when lifting. Make sure both left and right are pulled flush to the end of the guide rail when lifting.

Didn't take a pic of the bracket as I actually nearly cried when it happened :(

The wife had to help me again take the backbox off and re-fit.

So first word of warning:

Check the diodes direction

Second:

Check the diodes direction

Third

Check the diodes direction

This has made me think about my T2 build.

I checked the wiring after I re-soldered everything to make sure it all looked good but after ready about your recent experience I’m gonna go over it again to be sure all the diodes and wires are the right way round.

Your LOTR is looking top notch mate 👍🏻

Thanks, I also checked all the soldiering and wiring before I turned on, however I didn't check the diode direction. I tripple checked these when I soildered, from the pics I took.

I should have used the manual and checked them all.

With STTNG I made the mistake of looking at the pictures and didn't realise the coil and thus the diode was reversed, it caused me all sorts of damage, so I would def check with the Williams. To be honest at the time I was so new I didn't even know there was a diode "lol" I just thought the wires had to be on the same place.

Thanks, I'm very happy with it so far, looked NItB when I turned it on. The lights really popped. Hopefully no damage has been done to the power driver board. I think not as it didn't fire, unlike STTNG where it allowed a couple of games 🙁🤭

Great advice mate. Definitely going to do this before I switch it on.

EMERGENCY - HELP PLEASE

Fuses and new coil turned up today from pinball heaven.

Fitted new fuse changed the coil. The old fuse smashed when It took it out, got all the glass out (i think)

Turned machine on all flippers fired, all working fuse fine, noticed some light smoke coming from the bottom by the auto launcher (thank god). Turned machine off, coil was red hot and the bracket red hot. Sleeve has fused to the coil.

Thought maybe its a faulty coil, but the original coil on the machine. Did the same started getting hot.

No fuses blown.

Checked all other coils all cool to touch.

Now its a serious fire risk, any one have any clue what would cause this, its only on the auto launcher.

Any one know any one in Northern Ireland who an expert who could take a look? (paid or a favour :( )

Any one in England that could check it all, if I bought it over :( (paid or a favour), I'm thinking possibly pinball heaven but any other trusted people on here?

:( very sad, but could have been worse. Everything is working and turned off straight away.

Sounds like a fried driver. Manual should tell you which one it is

Hi Chris if you disconnect the coil and stick a multimeter on the two connections to see if you have a permanent 50 volts with machine on,if so it sounds like a faulty TIP 102 driver as @drhex says

Have been feeling a little sorry for myself, had a nice surprise delivered by my Amercian friend today....

NOS full set of stickers

Now these are ultra rare, well I havent seen any :)

Pinball heaven have kindly agreed to look at the board and fix, I'm not comfortable solider on a board for the first time. If I could practice first with some guidence would be fine, but not risking it :)

Thanks Drhex for the quick response, Fubar also thinks so and from looking a little makes sense with the diode.

Thanks, I bought this one for STTNG

One I recieved was slightly different from the picture, tools have been put away for christmas, Il dig it out over the coming days and some guidence before I turn the machine on would be fantastic. In case:

a:) Its the wrong type
b) I've connected it wrong
c:) I'm stupid :)

I can talk you through it if you want. Easy enough to do.
Thanks, in the future yes please, I need to get hold of some junk boards to have a go on. Not Junk that someone doesn't have the skill to fix. One thats badly battery damaged.

I've spent a fortune on this build, so don't want to cock it up on a minor fix, (if skilled/experienced)

So I have an interesting problem, recieved NOS Balrog from pinball life in the US, however when I tried to fit it the bracket on mine and the replacement bracket from marco the holes are out of allignment.

Its basically a couple of milimeters off both base and sides.

Pinball life have been super helpful and can't understand why, the only other one in existance which they happen to have looks the same, they dont have a balrog bracket to test as they don't exist anly more. My only guess is there was some sort of change, however pinball life haven't heard of stern doing it. (outside of early balrogs melting due to indesecent bulb getting too hot and melting him, Stern change was to fit LED bulb). The one they sent has a solid base and seems a little stronger.

Pic has the original nasty bracket, I fitted the new one to the exisitng balrogPXL_20211217_215412174.jpgPXL_20211217_220009078.jpg

I'ts not worth sending back as the shipping will hammer me.

I'm also thinking if a balrog is needed this wont be easy probably impossible to get and very difficult to fabricate. However a basic metal bracket I'm guessing some one could 3d scan and adjust the holes pretty easily wihtout it being stupidly expensive.

and the cost, well thats embarrising, feel free to take a guess :)

There are a couple of high ticket items, pinsound kit, custom ring shooter rod, Custom sword (shipping and import duties hammer these up as many are only avaialbe in the US)

Guess you can’t count the mods as that would have happened even on a really nice one. Just doing up my TZ, way more items to replace to make it decent than I thought necessary. And then there are the mods…

The same experience with replacing items, the interesting thing is it looked ok, but when you do a like for like you can see the difference, sometimes massively. Yes the mods, if you can get them, LOTR is a little tricky. Not sure about twilight zone.

The problem I had was a couple of small parts that I didn't know I needed, until I got to them in the machine, like Balrogs bracket, nylon washers etc. Unfortunately these are only available from either marco or pinball life, which with the shipping and taxes made me buy other things, still in the end its worth it.

I think the two most beneficial upgrades are:

1) Colour DMD
2) Pinsound Plus, speakers and headphone station

These definitely improve the machine; the others make it look good but not really necessary.

I also have the philosophy right or wrong that on a twenty-year-old machine, if I'm spending the time disassembling a particular part, for example the up kicker, to change a switch it makes sense to replace all the wear and tear parts at the same time. Makes it right for the next 20 years :)
Unfortunately this philosophy is expensive *lol*

For newer machines I wouldn’t as they started to become mainly in home settings with not much play, but certainly the 90’s Williams where hammered, I doubt many originally where sold as home use only.

Yes, mine must have been in a flood at some point, everything corroded pretty badly. Played just fine though but I did want it to put in a proto playfield anyway so expected to fully disassemble, Lot‘s of polishing and parts buying to be done…

Mine was at the sea side, perhaps an arcade by the sea or a shed, a fair number of bits salt corroded, all gone now!

That will be a big job at least 100 hours :)

Personally try and buy them all at once from Marco, its perhaps a little more expensive, but they list the part numbers correctly and have them in stock (well mostly, only had one part tht no longer exists, go out of stock after ordering) The great thing about there website is UK shipping, taxes and duties are included at the checkout, so you can make a decision if its worth it before clicking the buy button. PayPal are also doing 4 months interest free, which marco accept, which makes it also attractive. Damn paypal interest free, that also increased my spend *lol*

Yes, they are great, almost a reason to move to the US ;-). Ordered quite a few bits of him, but polishing up ball through etc which comes out reasonably well. All screws which were in the side wall are corroded, worst thing though is the back panel of the back box which is completely swollen up - need to think about getting another one (or leave it as I rarely look ar my pin from the rear. Then again bought radcals, once they are on I‘ll kick myself if I have to reorder them for the backbox if I ever replace. Decisions, decisions…
Mine is from Germany originally, seaside could be a reason, maybe some waves hitting it :). Also, some idiot decided that greasing the solenoids was a good idea. Terrible mess…

Are you keeping the skills posts activated?

I've disabled mine and just ordered axe side rails to hide the second buttons.
