The "C" Word

Probably a good thing because when 70% corporation tax kicks in and a 10-20% capital gains and personal tax rise kicks in probably have no punters anyway!

300B of borrowing makes the banking crisis look like a tea party.

There’s going to have to be some creative taxes as a result of all this

a relatively painless cash grab would be to admit the whole idea of prohibition is deeply flawed and legalise and regulate drugs use. thats several billion pounds of tax revenue waiting to be collected from existing users every year. be interesting to see if they have the balls for this.

cant see anyone in the public sector getting a pay rise for the next 5 years. I wouldn’t mind as much if MPs hadn’t absolutely taken the **** about awarding themselves increases on a regular basis over the last 10 years while the rest of us had effective pay cuts.

I was thinking 2 months ago that obvious tax increase would be 2%+ on all income tax rates, and freeze the 0% allowance. Read an article the other day that reminded me that there is a Government commitment not to increase it, so 2 ways around that, get opposition support for it, or have an election next year without giving such commitments.

Will capital gains tax matter as much in the short term with all the losses that have been made in the last 3 months, surely won't be raising as much regardless what rate its set at?

Government commitments are often conveniently "forgotten".

there is no way legal drugs even scratches the surface.

personal tax up 5% Thats an additional £10B
corp tax up 10% that's another £10B
Double Capital gains tax, maybe £5B

Kill HS2, airport expansion and cuts another 15B

so 40B to pay back on 300B at best 15 years probably more...

and they thought the bank crisis killed generation.

Tax revenue is going to be very different isn’t it?

People working from home so lots less gained from duty on fuel.

No pubs etc so duty and on alcohol Massively down.

Less professional sport so maybe tax on gambling down (or maybe not if people gamble on other things)

Stamp duty. Lots of property hitting the markets if we see big increases in unemployment. Can’t decide if this will go up due to the number of transactions or down if the selling price falls.

if people end up eating far more at home then presumably VAT takes a big hit.

Airport taxes massively down.

And all that’s before income tax/NI/corporation tax.

It’s going to be ..... interesting. Let’s hope there is a quick bounce back

Very sorry to hear that @AlanJ

Must be truly awful, and doubly awful given Corona and its implications.

For what it is worth I have lost both my parents. I sincerely believe that what really matters is how they lived their lives for decades, how you interacted with them, the lives they touched, not the circumstances surrounding their death and not what happened afterwards.

Anyone else watching the Live Dominic Cummings statement?
Talk about a low level Scotland Yard statement - 👏 well thought out and executed 🙄😂

No, what excuses did he have for risking his parents, petrol station attendants, people who used the pumps after him etc. health. Plus all the people they came into contact with subsequently . Basically all the reasons we weren’t supposed to travel?

I've seen the West Wing episode where this strategy was employed. Keep getting asked questions until there are no more questions and hope that is the end of the issue.

He broke no rules and I personally would have done the same thing.

He said he sought specialist medical advice as to whether he was safe to go back to work . They said ‘yes’ So he told his wife and she said ‘but are you safe to drive there’? To which he could have said I’ll get them to fetch me or I’ll call back and ask them. But she said don’t do that , I tell you what let’s go for a day out at the castle that’s the best way to find out

You can think what you like but this is like a chap getting caught having an affair explaining how his trousers broke and fell down

But Neil you weren’t one of the key people responsible for telling everyone to lockdown. That is a huge difference.

The governments policy is now in utter disarray. How can you expect people to follow what they say if they don’t do it themselves?

It’s utter ******** to say they had no one else to look after their child. So many people were in the same situation and didn’t decide to travel 300 miles. He also has a sister living close by who could of helped if necessary.

Basically he panicked and fled London and now is trying to justify it with half truths.

Part of leadership is leadership by example. This is a clear case of hypocrisy. Trying to weasel out of it rather than apologising puts the government in an impossible position.

Oh please, stop doing a guardian fake anger response nonsense... I'm done with the acting anger BS on this.

Who here on pinball info knows Dominic Cummings sister? for the record I don't.

So you know his sister? Do you know if she lives in a one bedroom hovel or a nine bedroom mansion? Do you know if she was able to watch them? NOBODY ****ING KNOWS.

Here is what the rules say:

"If you have children, keep following this advice to the best of your ability, however, we are aware that not all these measures will be possible."

Why o why o why o why would they have that line in the rules if they knew that some people would have challenges.

Let me tell you LOADS OF PEOPLE travelled through lockdown, some more than the distance he drove, and I suspect for the VAST majority of them they did it because of an urgent need. Its not like I"M TRAVELLING UP TO MANCHESTER TO WATCH UNITED because everything was closed.

He was worried that he might be unable to watch his kid, so he drove to where he knew his kid could be looked after (I mean for ****s sake, if you are going to drive somewhere Country Durham and the grim north is secondly only to Paisley in places you'd never visit if you thought you might die).

he is an ordinary bloke, he was sick, he tried to look after his kid.

I would have done exactly the same thing.

I am 100% in favour of following the rules because they will make this ****ing mess end the quickest but there are some who can't, and the VAST majority of them not for frivolous reasons.

There are about 3 labour MP's that have done worse that his Cummings, but the mirror and guardian only invettigate people they don't like. Its total bull**** and if you fall for propoganda you need your head looking at.

If you want to be angry about something:

Be angry the government didn't start lockdown two weeks earlier
be agnry the government didn't close airports sooner
be angry that folks running bars, restaurants etc ignored advice to close the week prior to lockdown
be angry that Liverpool-Atletico (WITH PEOPLE FROM FREAKING SPAIN!!!) was allowed to go on
be angry that Cheltenham horse racing festival happened.

but one guy who drove his family to be looked after and stayed out of everyones way. sorry that's just a nonsense.

he wasn't at the castle for day though, BUT HEY lets not let the facts get in the way of a good story! :D

I am indeed angry they didn’t start the lockdown earlier
It’s not fake anger
I’m also angry that he hasn’t followed the rules as millions have in more trying circumstances than his
That’s not fake either
I don’t think it’s that big a deal though . If he admitted what he did was wrong and gave all that stuff as the circumstances to explain it, I would have been ok, but instead they have reverse engineered the rules , angered millions , and risked future compliance with the rules just so he didn’t have to apologise .
It’s bizarre
It is beyond doubt that it wasn’t essential travel on 12th April to test your eyesight ?

I personally have driven a short distance to be sure I was fit to drive so I get that.

but I. don't know how he has reverse engineered anything.

All politicians from all sides should be held to account.

If the public can’t trust mps etc to uphold their own standards then what hope is there of the public sticking to advise?

There is going to be a real battle to get parents to take their 4-5 year old kids back to school. In order to get this done they have to trust the advice they are given. Incidents like this ultimately undermine this trust. This isn’t fake anger. It’s people seeing politicians saying one thing and then not following through themselves.

Similarly if members of the cabinet try to justify not sending there own kids back whilst advocating others do so will undermine trust even further.

Those exception clauses were intended for victims of domestic abuse. For everyone else the guidance was clear. Self isolate in your own home. Even if your partner is unwell, as the case was here, you do your best to isolate. What you don't do is bundle everyone into a tight space, like a car, for a few hours.

This guy is meant to be the brains behind government policy. It's terrifying that these are the best excuses he could come up with.

no they aren't, its terrible that you can't even get the basics right and this is the best you could come up with.

I’ve just typed this to make sure I could type this

no dood, often I've been on a long flight to the west coast of USA, or I'm jet lagged, or I'm on my way back from the 'ring or other track. I often feel fine but 30 mins in I feel shattered... I once ended up in a ditch near Houston because I thought I could drive 100 miles whilst ill.

Stolen of Facebook.
This is the press ignoring social distancing rules to shame someone who ignored a rule. Weird.

I had never heard of Cummings before the last 4-5 days. And to be honest, I don't give a monkey about what he did. I just think the press is rubbish.
