A few months ago a new member to the forum was selling their Taxi, which was in a lovely condition, for £800. A number of members notified the seller that they had under valued their Taxi, however, they were happy with their price.

What I took away from that particular sale was just how valuable it is to ask other members their opinion on prices (buying and selling), especially when you're finding your feet in this enjoyable but rather expensive hobby.

Agree with this but I have a problem with some that turn their opinions into abuse.

Could be - it as I said if I think someone is getting ripped off either by paying to high or potentially selling to low then I believe it’s the communities job to step in. Of course it’s just my opinion!

Just curious re the comment pay too high. If I advertised say a TZ for 50k that was sitting in a Bally executive's office since the release and had all the original mods including third magnet, clock etc and was in mint condition is that too high a price?

Yes. Way too high 😉
But what about an absolutely mint King Kong? what value would be attached to that?

personally I don’t believe in people absolutely skinning each other. Slightly overvalued is none of my business. Buy a machine for virtually nothing and flip it the next day for 5k more than it’s worth. Maybe they’re a smart businessman but I doubt I’d want that person as a friend. (This comment isn’t directed at anyone/just hypothetical)

Too high? Value of King Kong? There is a supposed piece of art with a plaster human figure playing a pinball machine(not working) that sold for over 300k.It just amounts to the eye of the beholder IMO.

He didn't mainly because his story had holes in it I believe.

Are you saying there were some people seriously interested that didn't buy it because he was a dodgy salesman?

I certainly didn't get that impression from the thread. And I read a lot of it. Because it was hilarious.

The imamaculate Baywatch thread was funnier, did you read that? We tread lightly over here, the price police on Pinside are ten times worse.

Yea the thread went on for ages 'hilarious"" I am not so sure. The guy copped a lot of abuse and it ended up like a lynch mob intent on their type of justice. To answer your question yes there will always be someone who is interested.

My gut feel is that the number of people who would be interested in dropping serious wads of cash over something they could get for 1/10 of the price would be dwarfed by the number of people who would find that thread hilarious.

Interesting thread this.

Personally I believe in freedom of speech and if someone wants to sell a TZ for 50k so be it. Is that price gouging? Market forces? So what. it really is up to the buyer to make the decision. That buyer may be happy with the purchase. The mention of banning rubs against the grain.

Let me pose a question to others here.Have you purchased a machine from someone well below its value and raved on about the bargain you got? Is that not reverse price gouging? Why didn't you say to the seller here mate your machine is too cheap i will pay you more. for it?
100% Agree!

Pin priced at X
All those who have seen similar for sale ads on here & ebay say that's the right price irrespective of if it sells for that price
All pins now priced at X
Repeat...

Meanwhile all those who actually buy or sell and know the real story are not allowed to comment on the inflated price. Take the £1500 pinbot that has not sold on ebay twice now and he won't take any less "because its worth more than that mate". Err, no it obviously isnt.

So, only those with a proven record of selling quantites of pins are the ones I would trust to value a machine.

When I first started buying and selling pinball machines there was no forum to help me and tbh I think that was a good thing. This might not be the most popular of opinions and I hear what Neil and others are saying about supporting new people into the hobby but for me, do your own homework and then pay what you're comfortable with. I'd like to think I have a reasonable handle on the prices of pins and what I believe they should be bought and sold for but I also think I got to that position by doing a lot of research, especially when I was first getting into the hobby.

I see a lot of comments on here re: this is overpriced or this is a bargain which in my opinion are wrong but I don't wade into their threads as I believe the potential buyer needs to figure this out for themselves and in turn gain a better understanding of what their comfort levels are in terms of spend  All in my humble opinion of course :)

Something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Unfortunately too many people new to the hobby come in with their eyes close. I certainly wouldnt want to come in and pay a considerable amount of money for something that was worse considerably less.
I would actively want someone to warn me off.
As a seller you should have a grasp of the market as well as what you want for it. If you want 6k for a whitewater thats fine, however you should also be able to back up the reason for the High asking price.

We have seen several pins on here that had their price reduced and reduced until someone has bitten at a price which is good to them. I see more and more of this in the future as prices seem to be slowly re-adjusting themselves with more new machines appearing on the market and the demand staying steady.

just my personal $0.02

Surely anything is worth what someone is prepared to pay for it? Witness the absurd prices people are asking for Stern "Supreme" Pins! If someone is prepared to buy a box of frogs for £10k and the buyer is fully aware of what they are getting, then good on the seller!

and this is where the problem arises as people see that price advertised and instantly all similar are "worth" the same. It be becomes perceived as the value of that title. A for example. The BOP that sold for £3K. Now its very nice and fully restored but that doesn't push up the price of others i.e. it doesn't make your BOP worth the same. Had this "another recently sold for X" quoted to me recently.

Hello all,

I'm new to joining the pinball community. I'd just like to say that I can see that this forum is a place where people try to be fair and reasonable.

The thing I like most is that people keep it family-friendly. To me pinball is the most family-friendly game around. My son is currently wearing a headset with blue lights, earbuds in, two glowing sticks in his hands and has no interest in the room he is in. With pinball we can stand around together sharing the trials and tribulations of launching the ball.

p.s. I also love the fact that he is currently solving a solution with a boy in the US and and one in Australia.

We are off to walk round the lake in a bit. A bit of everything.

All I really wanted to say is that I've found everyone here to be really thoughtful and decent.

Yes, that maybe, possibly, probably should be posted in a in noob thread , but I like this thread and those feelings were aroused by it, so I wanted to share it here Hope that's ok. x

But this is no different to say a car. Many years ago I had a Ford Capri 3000e that was fitted with a Wade Supercharger. I eventually sold it for nearly £2500 more than a standard model. Condition is all. It is a shame that someone has not produced a "Glass's Guide" for pinballs in Europe with specific condition markers.

Thanks, Mark.

I thought that if it hadn't already been a valid description, it should be. Worthy of the Viz 'Profanisaurus', even.
