Paging anybody with more electrical knowledge than me, which is probably everybody reading this.....

OK, so thought it would be easy enough to replace a 4ohm 5 1/4" speaker. Question is what's this blue thing and is it required?

Note to smart ****s :) the speaker isn't dead because it's disconnected, it really is dead. Proved by attaching another speaker which worked but degraded the sound - possibly as it was rated at 6ohm instead of 4. Other side already been replaced prior to me getting it.

Bally used 4 ohm speakers right?

Blue thing is a capacitor used as a high pass filter ( removes sounds below a certain frequency therefore limiting bass to that speaker ). Depends if you are fitting full range speakers I guess, although a speaker that size will never produce anything in the way of bass.

Others feel free to chip in here and correct me.

I suppose you could try the replacement with/without the capacitor and see how it sounds.

Hi 'Toasty'

As Kevlar says, it's a high pass filter to block the lower frequencies from the 3" tweeter on the right (as you look at the machine).
The midrange speaker (on the left) is 5 1/4". and yes they are both 4 ohms.

I wouldn't have thought you could just replace the 3" with a 5 1/4" without either a spacer ring or actually increasing the diameter of the hole (depending on the design of the replacement speaker)

If you’re just after another tweeter – I should have one somewhere from when I upgraded my TZ.

I can recommend upgrading both speakers though – see here -> http://www.dziedzic.us/wpc_speaker_replacement.html
and in this thread (http://www.pinballinfo.com/community/threads/upgrading-speakers.6439/#post-39223) that has a link to the ones I used as replacements (after rewiring as per the above link)
Cheers

Geoff
