JJP Toy Story 4

I’m a socialist. I figured he was the overpaid flunky of an evil corporation who were designing dubious tech, and he deserved everything he got 😈

In which case I'm surprised Gabby Gabby Bezos-Musk isn't on on the Monroe hit list.

Not having a go 😂 but having watched so many of your videos and games you’ve moved on
I’m going to now fully declare the

GONZO’S GAME-O-RAMA OF LIKES FORMULA!!!! 😂

Pay attention students!

IF $GAME = (“Easy”) THEN SET $GONZOOPINION == (“Like”)
OTHERWISE SET $GONZOOPINION == (“Don’t Like”)

And I’m being a tiny bit unfair but that’s mostly what I get from your reviews and videos of games and when you look at the games you have in your own setup and the ones you have moved on (AIQ, TWD etc) I think you need to get one of these brutal games back and push yourself to learn how to play it well - it will give the reviews you do a lot more value, make you a much better player too. I did it with TWD; when I first played it - I never wanted to see it again but one of the guys at Pinburgh who hammered me on it convinced me that being able to play well on TWD would mean I would play well on a lot of other games and he was spot on. (Watch some of my ancient stream on how **** I was when I got that game!).

Toy Story 4 has been created like Munsters; game play wise it’s dead on arrival but if you aren’t the best player you will initially, like many folks did with Munsters, like it. But after a bit of time the lack of strong gameplay will eventually mean you move the game on.

Compared to other JJP games Ts4 has the least gameplay and those saying you’d buy it at 7K - if you spent two hours with the game before hand I seriously doubt you would, because the gameplay on this runs out value wise quickly. If you have a big line up then a game like this still fits but maybe not at 12K - for tournaments it’s completely freaking useless as it has stupid **** like endless kick back and shots that are just way too easy and even with posts out it will play forever.

Despite what Pat said this is a game directly aimed at operators with a well known theme some simple shots that non-geek pinball players will stick a lot of cash into.

cheers,
Neil.

JJP games lack a fun factor for me. I’ve gradually come to like WOZ but the theme doesn’t do it for me. I might as well be playing a Barbie meets Ken game. It also feels a bit like a game built by committee.
the Hobbit had a lot of promise but then seemed to be really compromised (plus the films were dreadful)
DI I liked enough to own but don’t miss it. Lots of gimmicks but didn’t really draw me in.
I’ve only played wonky once and thought it was better than its reputation
Couldn’t be ****d with PoTC
GnR undeniably looks great. The theme ticks boxes for me but unless I can pick one up for under 8k it’s unlikely to ever be here.
TS4. leaves me cold. It must be better than it’s reputation but that logic caused me to but a Munsters LE. Even I learnt fro, that one.

the prices alone mean I’m never going to take a punt on the new games.

With due respect, @Neil McRae, it's not about learning to be a good player or not. It's a personality thing...

I'm a pretty useless pinball player and I have tried, and tried, and tried, to like easier pins where I can make progress. And I just can't. Our entire front room is full of pins which no one except me finds fun (well, okay, a massive exaggeration, but it's not casual friendly).

As soon as I play a pin where I can make even the slightest progress because the shots are eas(ier), I feel bored out of my mind. The only reason why we've kept LoTR (and I've thought about moving it on a few times) is because I have a long-term ambition to get to Valinor and am using it to practice the same basic timed shots over... and over... and over...

Some people are naturally very competitive and approach every pin with the aim of reaching the high score table. Some people just want something nostalgic to play while drinking and hanging out with friends, or casually to hit a ball about after work.

JJP G'nR is a really good example. I absolutely HATED this pin on first play. The apron card was next-to-useless, I got a f****g multi ball straight out the gate, and I couldn't find what to shoot because the designers had apparently ignored the purpose of lane inserts and EVERYTHING WAS FLASHING. I literally walked off the pin after draining the third ball. Apparently, some people really love this pin because, as far as I can gather, they just flap the multiple balls everywhere, and the inserts look like a G n'R pop concert. I mean, great for them. They're not doing pinball wrong - they're just in it for the theme, the vibes and the fun - and not because they're hyper Type-A personalities who want to beat the **** (metaphorically) out of everyone.

I agree that more difficult games will make you a better player quicker, I think I've got better a lot faster in my first year playing from having JP2 and TMNT as my first 2 games than I would have if I'd got MB and DP for example. But I'd say while everyone would like to get better the majority of owners aren't aiming to be one of the best in the world and FUN is the main concern when choosing what to have in their collection.

If I wasn't so stubborn I'd have moved JP on quite soon after buying it, I had many times at the start I thought 'this is just too hard for me right now, I'll sell it and get it back later if I get better' but I carried on, watched videos of top players playing and tips and grew to really enjoy it, the frustrating games make the good games even more enjoyable for me. But I can see that someone with a different personality or someone who's owned more games and already knows what they like would have just sold it.

Not everyone wants a brutal or deep game, it's just not fun for them and that's fine. I'm starting to like GZ more than JP because it's a bit easier but still has depth and more personality imo. I'm also looking forward to having DP soon for an easier option, I enjoy a challenge but I wouldn't want a collection full of JP difficulty games and that's just my personal preference.

I think people should have whatever they find fun on in their own collections, don't have a game you just get frustrated at all the time and hate just because it might make you a better player. Some people find tougher/ frustrating games fun so I'm not saying only easy = fun.

I've not enjoyed any JJP game except Dialed In. First time I played Dialed in at Neil's I didn't get on with it but after playing it a lot at Pinball Office I really enjoyed it. The shots and flow feel great.

The other jjps didn't do anything for me. Gnr is awful, lots of confusing flashing lights and noise but doesn't feel like a good pin.

Gnr feels like it has an audience in mind and they're not necessarily serious about pinball... It feels like it's a light box where you hit balls around, and nod your head along to the music.

The original JJP trailer also gives that impression TBH. My little boys enjoy pinball machine trailers and Gnr is the only one my toddler didn't enjoy; it barely showed any pinball action and he's still a little young for the scantily-clad girl.

ive got gnr its a great pin to have a beer with and rock out listening to gnr and flicking the ball round ....ive no clue what im doing but im glad ive got it as my music pin ...its my first jjp pin and if Toy story is the direction JJP are going ie less costs more it will probably be my last unless I can find a Wonka!

Ive 8 pins now I find it quite hard to work out what im doing on them but then again I just love wacking the ball about .... theres people in the hobby that might look at pin enthusiasts like myself and snub us as being not worthy of having pins because we don't know every inch of the game structure or because we don't do comps but I couldn't care less...each to their own I couldn't think of anything worse than going to a competition with the beige brigade and talking about wizard modes and multipliers im right for that I like to look at my machine marvel at how beautiful and fun they are whilst having a beer with mates !

Pinball is meant to be fun and varied to all tastes and skill sets, people like different games and thats just fine some prefer simple some love deep games nothing wrong with each ....its just a game

I totally agree. That’s what I was trying to say to @Neil McRae.

Fun means different things to different people :) No ****, I watch PAPA tutorial videos for pleasure and, as I was in central London for a medical appointment yesterday, played an hour of JP Prem in Funland 😈

I personally don’t like Gnr because I’m interested in serious competitive play (I’m just no good at it) and was really frustrated by my (single) play at The Pinball Office. Got three balls cradled and couldn’t work out what I was supposed to be shooting at because literally everything was flashing. It was only at home that I looked up some reviews/ratings and realised I’d missed the entire point of the game to its fans

The beige brigade happen to be the people designing, coding and building your pinball machines!

But there is nothing beige about tournaments! They are the best place for community and I’ve met some friends for life that I met at tournaments.

If your into your tournaments that’s great but I’m not …horses for courses neil

The price is ludicrous. In terms of theme they've somehow managed to balls up Toy Story and within that ballsed up Toy Story 4. The wish.com tablet with the digital pinball is a huge miss. It's designed by Pat Lawlor. The sound effects seem especially iffy.

Nice try.

The 'Emmy' one was better. You're losing your trolling touch Neil. 😉

TS4 will be a hit with the kids and let’s face it we could all do with a few easier games. Was playing Dialed In this morning and had a fantastic game for me. Have the game set to give me 1 sim at the beginning(feel like cheating I know) Collected another three with three different types of multiball. I’ve never seen magnets do what that machine did to the balls.. Sheer brilliant game.. Pat Lawler is a genius!

He can't read your reply . . . . you've been naughty stepped.
I was asking everyone else 😈

TBH, I thought Neil had blocked me months ago…

I was actually being nice to him though, just disagreeing politely, and I figure, if he was going to block me, he should block everyone else who had the same opinion 🤷‍♂️ It’s also a real shame TBH as we do seem to share the same taste in pins and interest in tournament play.

Don't worry.

Start a thread saying BMW make the crap cars, JJP manufacture reliable pins and NASA never went to the moon . . . . he'll not be able to resist and you will be promptly un-muted (or is it de-muted? 🤔)

Now that’s funny … just watch neil unblock ya to tackle you over your views 🤪🤪🤪

I think the thread is more interesting than a Toy Story themed pin but that's more down to me being a newbie so there are hundreds of pins to play before I need to get het up over this one.

I have to say that the game is growing on me. I've played about 20 games today.

The shots are not difficult (apart from the skill shot) but the modes keep switching which sort of keeps you on your toes with the next shot.

It's probably a slightly deeper code than a Bally Williams but obviously it's not LOTR.

Jersey Jack is on the Super Awesome Pinball Show podcast talking about TS4. Worth a listen if you want to know more about the licensing and development of the game. Turns out they did have the license for 1-3.

If they chose to release Toy Story instead of Wonka it would have been 1-3.

Can they still make a 1-3 version? Or maybe retheme the current one but 1-3 sorta like spooky with Halloween and ultra man, ppl seam to want the 1-3 assets

Highly unlikely they would do. They could have released 1-4 but once the Toy Story 4 film was up and running Disney said it had to be 4.
