Hi Folks

So I built this summer house exactly a year ago, and have sat in it about 6 times in total !

I have decided to convert it into a games room / workshop

The idea is to make the already enclosed area a workshop, and then box in the under cover area with UPVC windows.
There will be enough room for about 6 pins in the games area.

I thought about it for a while, and a friend of mine who owns a glazing company found me a nice patio door and adjoining panels for £100 !
I put them into place and they look ok...

Tomorrow they will be properly installed, with glass panels filling in the rest of the open front and sides...

I have had electric fitted last week...
Power, lighting and provision for an aircon unit which i hope will keep the room cool and heated in the winter

Big Question is, what have i forgotten ?!

The floor currently is decking, thats going to be covered with damp proofing plastic and then boarded with weather proof plyboard

I am looking for some cool floor tiles... any suggestions ?

Your input would be appreciated

Insulation? Gonna need it in winter. Looks like 40mm timber cladding but don't think that'll be enough unless maybe heater and de-humidifier on constantly.

Conversion needs doing though. :D Six sittings does not justify it as-is ! ;)

A little hard to insulate, and keep the nice internal wooden look, so i have decided to constantly run an air conditioner to automatically heat and cool as needed... I know it will cost, but i can offset the cost against what my solar panels generate hopefully

OK, interested to know how that goes. I've looked at cabins for years and want to extend or add on to my garage games room at some stage. The adding of insulation and further internal cladding has always put me off a bit. Was never sure how 40mm timber alone would perform..... think I would still do the roof at least (celotex cut to fit within and push against the beams to hold in place) and maybe the floor (25mm polystyrene sealed in by the plywood you've proposed).

Looking good - have you thought about lighting ? That strip light might cause problems on the playfield glass if it is above the machines.

When it's finished stick the whole thing on a trailer on deliver it to my garden please. I can't do weekdays but just drop it off on any Saturday [emoji6]

The LED strip light is really just for working.. i will have something more subtle for when gaming

If i could get it on a trailer i would !!!

I'm also watching this thread closely- I'm thinking a budget of about £4K do you think that would cover the cost? Ideally to house a few pins, arcade cab and a sofa w/ HD projector

Definitely worth sticking a bit of roof insulation in and putting some OSB board on top, cheap as chips and will look alright. :)
Carpet tiles are good, cheap, hard wearing and easy to lay yourself.
Here's what I was thinking of getting for a pin shack: https://dunsterhouse.co.uk/premiumplus-modetro-grande-w8-5m-x-d4-5m
On costing it all up with a few extras I will probably be better off building it myself and using it as a guide. Also I don't think the ceiling heights at the eaves are tall enough to fit a pin with a topper?
4.50m wide is about right for having two pins facing each other and still being able to get the glass off.

Floor completed, happy with the progress so far..

So next up is the air con, which is booked for 3 weeks time

Guess i need to start looking for a couple more pins to compliment my Flintstones.
Anyone selling any mis 90's DMD machines at reasonable cost, players machines not mint.. ??IMG_8075.JPGIMG_8076.JPGIMG_8077.JPGIMG_8044.JPG

Nice use of the open space, have you thought about coverings for the windows to reduce fading from the sun and keeping unwanted eyes from your collection?

Just when I manage to get round to doing mine I'm thinking about using etched glass, but not sure yet and wanting to get others opinions on it?

Rather than etched glass you can buy a roll of opaque film. The sort where you spray the glass with soapy water then squeegee the film on. I have done this, it works well

You can also apparently buy spray paint that achieves the same result, but i have not tried this

That sounds good, my container has perspex windows just now. When it's done up I I want to change them for double glazed units so I'll price them up and see if it makes a difference.

With double glazing, most towns have a "trade" place where local builders buy made to measure double glazed windows. LEAd time about a week

They are surprisingly cheap. Fitting is a doddle. Beading on the inside. Drill, fixings, plastic packers. Knock the beading home with a plastic mallet. Then builders foam to also glue the window to the opening. Silicone both sides. I saw the level of skill and care employed to fit windows. If you can maintain pinball machines, you can fit windows

If is for a home, you ought to use a fensa certified installer, or you can get hassle when selling the place. But i cant believe it matters for a shed

It shows how much of a rip off some of these high pressure/ mega discount guys are that come to your hôuse. What you might get charged hundreds for, you can buy for 50 to 100 or so. A nice opaque glass is called stippolyte.

Have you any experience of fitting roof insulation ?
I want to do my garage but haven't a clue where to start.

If you have plenty of vertical height (ie 30cm) AND à ceiling - use fibreglass. IT IS Massively cheaper than Polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam aka celotex, kingspan, xtratherm. Fibreglass is horrible to cut, install, but once up it does the job

PIR foam is the modern insulation of choice for many applications, it is superb. Much, much thinner. 50mm might do you. Rigid, cuts easily. Comes in 1.2m by 2.4m boards. BUT it is expensive. Builders' merchants charge Monster Fish prices for it.

Shop around. There are specialist insulation merchants in cities' these can be much cheaper than general builders' merchants

The manufacturers - kingspan, xtratherm, celotex etc all have phone based technical helplines. Give them a call to determine what is your best option

Thanks David.
I'm not too bad for headroom as I no longer have any pins with toppers.

Holy name change batman !

I cant remember your roof, does it have horizontal timbers ? Or any timbers ?

Hi good points, the sun doesn't shine directly into the glass, it passes around the back of the wooden side, so i don't think fade will be an issue

Luckily my garden is enclosed and only overlooked by my 2 elderly neighbours, so security is not much of an issue.
I own an intruder alarm business, so will have the room belled up soon too !

great point though and thanks for raising them

It's a concrete apex roof with a steel apex frame. I'll take a couple of photos when I get home.
