Hello one of my pop bumpers on my Data Eat Star Wars isn't working please could some one advice me the best way to test to see what it broke.

Thank you Simon

Not too sure about DE games but start in the switch test, press down on the plastic ring at the bottom of the bumper and see if the switch registers.

Also check coil works in diagnostic test.

Visually check pop mech, compare it to others. Can you move it freely by hand - do this with power off if under the playfield.

Check for loose / broken wires at pop coil lugs and switch.

Reseat any relevant connectors.

Ok thanks lads, as you can see I am a novice at messing with pinballs but have a knowledge of domestic electrics.
Unbelievably I've had this machine for about 18 years and the pop bumper has never worked. I will have a go with what you have advised.
thanks again

90% of the time it's just a wire fallen off. Check to see if the switch makes under the playfield. Alot of the time you won't even need the manual to find the problem.

Right I have got to the bottom of that problem, darren you where right it is a wire that has come away, can you recommend a soldering iron I need or will any do. Also when I select free play in the settling turn the machine off and back on again the free setting has feature has gone back to coin play. Why would this be happening ?

I'd say your settings aren't saving. Probably due to no batteries or dead batteries? Replace them and adjust the settings.
I wouldn't recommend any soldering iron. You need a temperature controlled one to be fair. Maplin do them. I think mine was about £80 but it's not bad for the price. An absolute must have is 'tin lead solder'. Can buy this on eBay. It does make a difference as you can't get the bloody stuff to stick.
If you're doing it on the cheap then a normal soldering iron will do. Can get those from screwfix but the ends tend to melt. Hence why i went for a temperature controlled one.

P.s don't forget the tin lead solder

Ok I will have a look at the one from Maplin, I'd rather pay a bit more and not struggle. Thanks for the advice on the batteries I'll have a look.

Good find. I have a temp controlled solder station which is great for PCB repairs, but for simple jobs in/around the machine like this I prefer to use my old cheap wand style as it doesn't have a base to lug around.

I guess I'm saying that both are useful so why not just buy what you need for now, something like this from Screwfix;

Some of us on here have this solder station, it's normally on sale or can buy cheaper from eBay - see what I mean about the base but its great on the bench

I found the tip on that screwfix one started pitting because of the heat. Had to keep filing it down into a point. It does the job but you still have to drag around an extention cable with you as the lead is so short.
