Updated time !!
Folding work bench is now complete
Cab is now on the work bench
Just taken on side rail off ......
So how to take the side rails off with out damaging themIMG_20181013_213902186.jpg
I cutting a slot in the head of the nail and tried to unscrew the twist nail ,but it did not work .In the end I used dremel to flatten the head of the nailIMG_20181013_214006361.jpg
Then drilled the head as you would do when you drill out a pop rivet .IMG_20181013_214135096.jpg
IMG_20181013_215017567.jpgone side off and now with a bit of a clean to see the true colour of that Gray.IMG_20181013_220140780.jpg
As you can see the nails are still in ,will just gouge them out ,drill a large hole and glue in a piece off dowel

I remember reading an article years ago somewhere where a guy had removed the nails and used pan head bolts to hold them in place as he had his pins in a narrow room and could not slide the glass right out,he used this method so he could then unbolt a rail and lift the glass off for playfield cleaning/repairs

So pushed the beach over so to get to work on the over sideIMG_20181014_095218042.jpg
So much but better then flipping the cab over !
You really need to drill dead center getting theses nails out IMG_20181014_094129167.jpgotherwise you end up doing this to tap the head off IMG_20181014_095407775.jpg
Side rails off time to take the glass guide off , like to give it a bit of a clean first .when I took these off on fish tales these were stapled on .IMG_20181014_095721349.jpgIMG_20181014_100041800.jpgIMG_20181014_100756057.jpg
Wish I could of done that with the side rails !!IMG_20181014_212142053.jpg
Near all striped out only leg plates and them nails !!

Well did try to take them rusty nails out without damaging the cab ,but it was a no go ,so... Used brut force and ignorance
IMG_20181015_193946410.jpg
Now hit down with hammer so these old things dig in around the nail and then just pull out IMG_20181015_194200766.jpgand stand back and admire the neat job you are doing and making less work for yourself at the same time

Next job up is repairing the cab !!

Well pin mojo has taken a bit of a battering , plus running out of space 😉
So cab side's have been reglued where needed .Top section clamped down and glued IMG_20190205_202104108.jpg
Reinforced the back and top inside IMG_20190408_205345649.jpg
Drill and plug the sidesIMG_20190224_181402028.jpgIMG_20190206_195021823.jpg
Steel plate under the cab removed and probably not refit it back as it is not really needed !!
Cleaning the hardboard underneath now ,then after that going to glue/ nail quadrant all away round the bottom I think !!IMG_20190408_205012223.jpg

Well I ended up fitting a quad bead around the the base ,a little bit over kill for the sides but it looks more finished off plus know more splinters coming off the bottom IMG_20190506_211939060.jpgIMG_20190506_212022036.jpg

Sanding time !!!
Was going to just flatten the paint on the cab but when I stuck a bit off masking tape on it it pulled the paint off so......it's got to all come off 🤔IMG_20190506_082841166.jpg

Had a little bit of repairing to do to the head of the cabIMG_20190425_195623788.jpg
Now I don't know why I repaired it this way apart from having some fun 😉IMG_20190425_202458813.jpg
IMG_20190425_202423135.jpg
Again let's use 2k filler
IMG_20190426_193016863.jpg
No having to much IMG_20190427_144801648.jpg
Then a clamp down IMG_20190427_145413170.jpg
Just need to plain down and sand IMG_20190427_144813424.jpg 👍IMG_20190506_220524866.jpg

shame! Going to re stencil? Looking good though made, deff in the right hands :)
Yes !! Going to re stencil this but still undecided on the paint weather to use car paint or acrylic , with car paint I would have to use epoxy primmer first 🤔

What did they use originally? In my limited experience, acrylic will rub off in time and to some degree is water soluble. If yo are going to do it to this degree i would use car paint mate - it is stops birdshot at 70+ miles an hr it has to be good for pinballs :)

Unsure really but the best cabinet I have ever had was my Pacman machine and I used T- cut on that and I got a nice glossy finish on it . So I am probably going to use car paint on it ,but I think I have to use a epoxy resin first . So frightened when I use this stencil kit it will pull of the paint . Still undecided weather to try to keep it as close to the original colour , ie the Gray colour on the cab is more like a blue / gray or go down the metallic route , so that's the Gray will become gray metallic ,black metallic and red metallic then lacquer to get the deep shine .

Acrylic isn’t water soluble when dry it’s harder to get off than enamel. Auto paint is generally acrylic to

It's not finished yet so it can still have the epic fail ...........
So a long time ago just before the lock down I started to buy the bits and pieces to start the painting of the cabinet like spray gun and connection's for the spray gun because I was going to borrow my brother's compressor and stuff ,so I can start spaying .The cabinet was all sanded down to 800 grit I think it was , it may have been 1500 , thinking about it now as I had a nice polished mirrored look to it . Then it happened , lockdown and that meant I couldn't get it from my brother's . More weeks passed by and fabulous sunny weather too ,so there was only one think left for me to do ....Screenshot_20200530-195238.pngyep! Buy one , as a need to sort my works car out tooIMG_20200601_155422923_HDR.jpgand so on IMG_20200601_160436254.jpgIMG_20200601_160507624_HDR.jpg

This will be an epic fail or a luckily escape
Here we go it's epoxy primer time , will be using Epifanes if it's good enough for boats then it should be good for a pinball cabinet hopefully IMG_20200614_112655916.jpg
Pop up tent in front of the garage is the only way I can do this IMG_20200614_112611020_HDR.jpgIMG_20200614_113831845.jpgnasty stuff this ...
And that face shield does absolutely nothing as there was more primer on my glasses than that shield :(
Three coats of paint this stuff requires , with each coat we use less thinners IMG_20200614_112632303_HDR.jpgYou have to let this primer set for weeks before you can actually sand this down ,No runs but not super smooth a lot of people have this problem when painting there boats .

Base coat time ....IMG_20200623_203650823.jpg

IMG_20200719_164543421.jpgIMG_20200719_164508536.jpgIMG_20200719_175154132.jpgWhile I was in waiting time for paint to dry properly let's start on the head , unfortunately I did not take any pics on this but what I did notice is this head is not a SI head because it was originally had blue paint on it with yellow lines on it .The door when I took out the lighting inner frame was like a wibbly wobbly jelly so that all had to be taken apart and regluedIMG_20200620_103619275.jpg more primer time
IMG_20200623_203450365.jpgIMG_20200623_203443619.jpgnot 100-percent show what happened here but 2pk filler and sanded down and then resprayed sorted this out !!.
Stencil time ...this stuff is super sticky in my opinion so don't press down hard . I used my big window squeezy for this job IMG_20200724_194822683.jpg

Ops forgot to mention once the stencil was fitted for the red spray paint on the cabinet there was a few air bubbles , I just left them alone no need to get them out .once the top final top layer was taken off to expose the areas which need to be painted , I lightly sanded that area with 800 grit sandpaper to form a key for the red paint to stick too , mostly likely not needed but I did it anyway .After a good fees days later I performed the next stage the black IMG-20200731-WA0004.jpgIMG-20200731-WA0005.jpgIMG-20200731-WA0006.jpgIMG-20200731-WA0003.jpg

Absolutely amazing the efforts gone into getting the cabinet resprayed. Looks fantastic. You can see why someone invented decals as spraying must be soooo time consuming. Looking forward to seeing the finished game. Keep up the updates carl.

Thanks Dom for your kind words . Stenciling this has been very stressful especially when you start to pull it off , Slow and low and keep on concentrating . Never sprayed using a compressor before and setting the gun and compressor up correctly is a big learning curve so much to learn in getting the correct flow of paint to the style how you use and move the gun over the work .I am about halfway through this process , still have the biggest challenge yet to come ....

Update time ... This is what I did Sunday just gone.IMG-20200802-WA0001.jpgand this is what I was doing on the other side IMG-20200802-WA0002.jpg
IMG_20200806_195821625.jpg
And tonight after work
It's clear coat time
IMG_20200806_200102208.jpgepic fail think this was because I was holding the new gun to far away and not pressing the trigger fully home I think :hmm:
IMG_20200806_200209185.jpg time for the head ....IMG_20200806_195849721.jpgIMG_20200806_195825154.jpgIMG_20200806_195911689.jpgIMG_20200806_210022512.jpgtop of the head looks really nice at this Angle IMG_20200806_210039506.jpgbut at this Angle not so good , not going to do anything to this as I might make a mess of the whole thing as the sides are perfect . As you all might of guess by now all the colors are a pearl metallic colours . Here is a pic with the flash on the camera ..IMG_20200806_213229019.jpgand now with no flash IMG_20200806_213240453.jpg
