Wanted So let's open a 'Can of Sterns' !!

So many great titles.

If you buy for the 'right' price, just play for 6 months and then rinse, repeat.

The new screens on BM66, AS, SW really make a difference so if I were going NIB would want the new screen.

yeah it wont be NIB until I'm convinced. Then do a refresh and got more sterns perhaps

Cheers

Can always pop over and check out my sterns kev.
One needs a playfield, one needs a ramp and ones tombstoned in the corner, lol............problem being they are all off the road. But you can look at them :-o

Nothing at all wrong with Sterns. I thought the traditionalists had finally given up the WMS being better rose tinted glasses. I like 90s games but the rules are shallow in a lot of them compared to some of the modern Sterns. There's a few utter turds out there but for me AC/DC, Metallica, TWD, Spider-Man, LOTR & Sopranos are all great games.
Probably best to avoid Monopoly, WOF, T3, 24 etc though unless they are cheap.

From what I see Bally Williams ARE indeed on the way out now. You only have to look at pics of people's game rooms to see rows of Stern's all lined up.

Stern are putting out 4 a year, and then we have JJP plus all the other boutique manufacturers. People don't have unlimited space, even in the US. So slowly but surely the 90's DMD games are being edged out.

Bally Williams may have made better games in their time, but modern Stern's with nice features and deep rules (even the crap ones) beat anything from the 90's now. Plus younger guys getting in to the hobby don't have the same attachment from their youth to the 90's pins, so they want the latest modern stuff too.

I think in the next 10 years the 90's stuff will go the same way as EM's. People will have the odd 1 here or there in their collection but their line up will mostly consist of Stern's.

I am with dan Bally Williams games will always be in collection they are much more sought after in the states than stern games em have shot up in value too over the last 2 years also there is the fact that everyone is tight over here so nib sterns don't sell a lot and then makes it harder to find one on the used market or demand a higher price than new after a few years

Yeah me too, every reasonably priced B/W is getting snapped up immediately, titles like TAF and WH20 have gone crazy. 90's titles seem more popular than ever right now. Can't see an end to that, the only way is up!

Sterns are great too though!
TWD gets more play than any other game in my collection.

I rather enjoyed Kiss when I played it. Nobody's mentioned it yet. Must admit I only played it for 30 mins but really enjoyed the flow. I especially liked the artwork cos it's old school drawn looking instead of the horrible photo artwork Stern seem to favour.

I disagree, my final lineup is now all set (after I sell 5 more) and it's 7 BW and 5 Stern

That's proof of the point I'm making - 5 Stern's represent 40% of your collection right now. What was it 5 years ago? What will it be in 10 years time?

If Stern are churning out 4 games per year, and people don't have unlimited space, then where are they all going?

After having a break from the pinball hobby for a few years I purchased a Family Guy - and its got to be one of the best pins I have ever owned.

Reliable too!

I was a big Bally William DMD game fan prior to this - I think I have owned most the DMD games they made except Congo and Champion Pub. I used to hate the 'feel' of stern flippers. Now I think they are electronically very well made games, the technology is of course 20 years ahead of DMD.

My choices - Family Guy - Spider Man - Aerosmith - Star Trek. Depends on your budget Sir !

well my Sterns are from 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and 2008, nothing since then, so i don't expect it to change too much tbh. 5 years ago there were plenty of DE and Sega or even Gotties thrown in, so no doubt a higher proportion of B-W in my collection, but that's inevitable as i was still trying them all out in a home environment and there are far more B-W games out there. in 10 years time i expect it'll still be 50/50 but i expect i'll have fewer games in my harem: i already made rough plans for my final 8 (4 B-W/4 Stern) and my final 4 (2/2) .....

Stern will eventually make enough games the calibre of TSPP and LOTR and SOP and POTC and BTDK (my 5 Stern keepers) to compete with B-W, but in my book that day is still 20 years or more away.

@newdos You were right . It's a can of worms. This is post 48!

I've had SM, Ripleys, LOTR and IMVE . All great games

I'm still a newb when it comes to maintenance but to me a great game is a great game , don't care who made them . In fact I'd like to play a few Gotts as I reckon I must be missing some bargain gems there

Definitely agree that DE/Sega and Gotties will go before WMS. Although I do know a few people who are DE nuts, and one person in particular who has every Gottlieb I think.

And those Sterns are keepers indeed I agree, but I think Star Trek and eventually Ghostbusters (once everything is finished) will be up there with those. Walking Dead could have been Stern's biggest game ever but it didn't get the production quality of ST or GB. Shame. It's the same with GoT as well. Like isn't that the biggest TV show ever? Yet noboby talks about the pin, and tbh from looking at it I don't care much either. Not played one though so can't comment too much.

I love Gottliebs. Wish they would get some more attention. I've never understood why hardcore pin-heads crap all over them, and mainly because of the flippers. Every manufacturer feels different, and different era's feel different. We must learn to appreciate each for what it is. Diversify and become good at playing any game.

It's like learning to drive in a Vauxhall and then taking a crap on Renault just because they feel different.

'Can o worms' keeps rolling!!! All fascinating stuff guys. SM is gotta be up there for me and hasn't been much mention for BTDK which I also like. Had a couple of potential offers so far so looking promising but keep you thoughts coming.

EDIT I should of owned and mentioned I did own one STERN and it was a bag o Shi*% - Indiana Jones - but a great multiball start but rules set crap. I think the biggest thing that put me off getting another after I shifted that one fairly quickly was ability to get spares - that was a few years ago now and only place I could get the bits I needed was direct from electrocoin which meant opening a trade account - PITA !!! what is it like now for getting STERN bits guys ?

Cheers

BTDK is good fun and worth owning for a while ( or borrowing :) ), it's not up there with SM or some of Sterns best though. Most of them are worth owning Kev. I personally love Avatar despite its less than stellar reputation, and most people who give it a chance really enjoy it too.

Tend to agree Kev most of the newer sterns are pretty good and I have played most of them, but you dont get much chance to give them a good play and really get into them, which is what I guess I am asking the owners what their thoughts are on them before I commit. I suppose I would consider any of them if the price is right.

KISS is a much better game than the reputation it has - an update would help for sure though. Has a super hard wizard mode and 2 mini wizard modes. Rock City wizard mode scoring is off the charts - don't think many get there though.

Sound is very good with Spike 1 and it feels like being at a concert with the stadium effect. And proper KISS band member call outs ( like MET ) add to the immersion.

That said, if you don't like the music, going to be harder to like but same goes for AS, AC/DC and MET.

Gotta admit I did like playing kiss and I thought it had a bit of an old bally williams feel to it which I liked, but as I said before not enought time with it to really get into it and understand it. Guess wouldn't get one very cheap yet anyway!!!

I have:

Big Buck Hunter
24
Spiderman
Pirates of the Caribbean
Star Trek
Walking Dead Premium
Sopranos
Elvis
AC/DC Premium
The Rolling Stones

My favourite is AC/DC, followed by Sopranos.

Really gone off Sterns recently, I have had loads but I'm not one for deep (never ending) rules or competitions. I just want to press that button and have fun. I currently have 17 Bally-Williams games, 5 Data East, one Gottlieb, one Sega and just one Stern, Sopranos which is brilliant :)

Meteor
Flight2000
Sea witch
(Close call with Dracula);) these are the ones I remember playing loads...and really enjoyed them.
problem with modern sterns is unless you own them , or have an inordinate amount of time to study tutorials the modern sterns are not that easy/quick to master. But a couple of modern ones I have had the chance to play and enjoy with lasting player appeal are...
Spiderman.
Metallica.
Tron.

seems to be a bit of a recurring theme - spiderman keeps popping up all the time :-)

Been playing Ghostbusters a tonne recently. Hard machine not to love if the theme suits. I really like POTC as well if you're looking for something a bit more reasonable.
