Claire's black hole has a few issues, one of the main ones is the sounds play randomly, ie, you can hit targets many times and get different sounds each time and other times switches won't produce any sounds at all.

Plus the background sound wasn't working at all until I noticed one wire out of a connector, popped it back and now we have random background sounds, which when working no other sounds work and it either never starts or never stops!

Googling tells me that it's often connectors. I've checked as many as I can and it's hard to tell if they're not good.
It's probably worth me redoing as many as I can to eliminate them being the issue.

Where do I find the right parts for the connectors? I'm ok with crimping but lots of these are IDC and the connector housings are different to the molex types.
Can you replace the edge connectors with similar connectors but that use molex or similar crimps rather than IDC?

Really in the dark with this game😄

I forgot to add, it's an export sound board. We are going to get the GOSOF soundboard from Lisy, and use the US domestic sounds. But this won't change anything if the issue is connectors or one of the other boards (tbf we're going to get new mpu and driver too but still, with bad connectors it's pointless)

You know it's just the connectors on the left side of the driver board that feed the sound board... have you checked them for broken pins and cleaned the tracks on the boards?
Huh, check the MPU to Driver board connector and clean tracks as well...

First check that earthing mods have been done, that the Orange Filtering Capacitor has been replaced.

I would also replace the old PSU board if it's not already been replaced. There's plenty out there so take your pick:

Use the test button on the sound board to check all the sounds are there first...

Connectors either buy from here:

or make your own by buying something like this then using a wizard tool or similar to cut to size:

How do I clean the tracks? These aren't ones you can reflow are they? ( It looks like someone tried once).

Regarding those connectors, wow what's with American pinball sites having websites straight from the late 1990s 🤣
It's so nostalgic!
I thought https://pbresource.com/Blackhole.html was bad (in a good way) but docentelectronics is on another level!

I've contacted them for a price🤞🏻

Re the Power supply, we're going to build our own as those prices are nuts and it's not a complex board 😄

Show the other side of the connector and I can check what I have. These edge connectors are not easy to get though. If it was the other edge type you could have reused the housing. not here though. What length is it? 12 pin?

Jim

The other alternative is used an arcade jamma edge type connector that is 12 pin length (2x12). These are double edge sided but that doesn't matter. Not as neat or factory and you'd have to solder the wires to the lugs but they are cheaper and available.
