I’m looking for a new car, one which will be comfy on long journeys, get a reasonable mpg. I don’t want a huge mpv or van as it’ll be a daily driver for commuting and most roads around me are country roads so something which won’t wallow everywhere. Priced somewhere between 2k-4k. Preferably over 130hp & diesel. I’ve been looking on the ridc website and looking for cars with big boot openings to fit.

Top contenders are:

Ford C-Max 2.0 diesel
Renault scenic 1.5
Toyota verso 2.2d
Maybe a slightly older S-Max.
Skoda yeti
Toyota verso..

Though I know some modern cars have an awkward lip to pull the machine up/over. So asking if there’s any recommendations.

cheers.

Careful with the Toyota 2.2 D4D, they have problems. Excessive oil consumption is one. I had a new T180 verso which pulled like a train but used a lot of oil, I got rid of it after I followed my wife driving it and saw the smoke😏

Thank you, I’ll take a look. I went and had a look at a 2012 Ford C-Max today, I think all but the tall gottliebs will fit but theres quite a big boot lip to get the machines back out and over so a more 4x4 flat load bay seems useful.

I know but I drove a Jazz, just a bit too small. Really want something focus/Mondeo size with a big enough boot.

No lip on that boot either so loading would be a breeze just dont know how deep it is with the back seats down ?

I don’t think the escort would be high enough, it’s pretty much just mpv’s and SUV’s tall enough to take ‘em without taking the backbox off (which I don’t fancy).
I think my SnS is https://www.pinwiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Vehicles_for_Moving_Pinball_Machines
34” tall when folded, whereas most are 30”-32” folded.

Subaru looks fun.

I’m looking for something up to max £5000, up to 2.0 diesel, preferably under 100,000miles and no older than 10 years.. my current car is a 2006 2.2d X-type now at 160,000 miles which was very nice & cheap when I got it a few years ago, but seems to bleed money out of me over the year with repairs. I’d go for a x-type estate if pins fit in it, most of the mpv’s I’ve seen just have that air of baby sick about them and scratched up seats from child seats. A lot of the plastics look like wolverine was driving. Jag is much nicer inside.
Even with the lip - Cmax is still top of the list as it’s got some nice bits like quick clear windscreen/climate control.

I had a CMax for many years and was perfect for moving pins.
I've also had a Citreon Picasso and now a Peugeot 5008, both easily take a pin, even with one of the rear seats in use, but may be too big for your needs.

I’m looking at a 2010 onward cmax, which seems to have basically the same boot as the previous model - take the rear seats out and loads of space. Did you find any other getting it over the lip a fuss or not to much of a worry? I get it’d be nice to slide it in and out without a lip, but leaning towards price/range/features of the cmax for day to day driving and the lip is the only negative I can see to it.

Thanks for all the advice - I've got myself a second hand C-Max and am very pleased with it. Yet to use it in anger - but got some good advice from @Moonraker to use a Pallet to raise the boot height so I can slide machines in/out. Going to do a little surgery on the pallet to reduce it's height as every inch matters to fit in those big loads! *ahem*.

Pleasant little car - very pleased!

Nice one mate 👍

Anyone know if a Toyota CH-R would fit a pinball? My Audi A3 is probably just too small (even with back seats down) but I can't tell if the Toyota would be better!

Have a look on RIDC - against an old Honda Jazz. You basically just want the same or higher boot opening height and 1.3/1.4 meters when the rear seats are folded.

Found out today that a Stern folded down is about 20mm higher than a B/W. Had to take the blanket out from under to make it fit in my X5!

Lots of the cross over/SUV types tend to have a high up boot line and some have quite a big lip - less/no lip is better to be able to slide pins in/out easy. The Mercedes E-Class estate (older model - not sure about new) can fit pins.. I am quite happy with my C-Max though I got a wooden pallet to place in the back so I have a level floor for loading in and out and that’s okay. Was also careful to get one without a spare tyre as that makes for more space. S-Max would be a plusher pin hauler or a Mercedes GL(?) there is a big Mercedes’ which fits them. Most fallen-out-of-favour mini vans would probably do - Picasso/zafira/touran. Or a big 4x4.

Thanks, that's really helpful! I was looking at Toyota as I quite fancy a hybrid for my next car (save on fuel!) but I'll shop around. A Honda Jazz would be OK too (although much less exciting to drive than an A3 😂)
