Night Moves by Gottlieb Help! Not Booting.

Hi guys, I’ve joined the wonderful world of pinball owners, nice site here.
So I recently worked and repaired a Bally’s slot machine and figured, hey pinball, why not! Lol.
So I picked up a mini pinball machine, Night Moves by Gottlieb. Very nice looking machine, looks complete. The previous owner stated it used to work well and slowly parts of the machine started shutting down. I purchased it “not working”. The unit plugs in, power switch flipped and only some play field lights turn on and the coin light comes on, there’s a lot of speaker noise (not really music) but noise. No LED display on the play field (it’s black) and inside the cabinet there’s a red light blinking on a motherboard to the right wall.
I do not know anything about pinball and figured before I start poking around, I’d ask you experts on what to try first?
I own a multimeter but I need to be walked thru on where to poke. I am no expert on a meter either.
Quarters go through but doesn’t really “activate” anything, nothing triggers if I push the buttons on the outside cabinet.

Check you're getting 5V from PSU to CPU and adjust the pot on PSU if not. Check all your fuses and re-seat all your board connectors, particularly those to CPU. Battery should be coin cell so unlikely to have leaked.

Looks like the old system 80/80A black rectangle one to me. Far left 3rd photo from the bottom.
 
Think he means doing the ground mods detailed in there, however I suspect your CPU will be playing up here. The battery is on that (the board with the dip switches).
 
The play field has a hinge that swings up vertical, how far back does it suppose to go? My question is, is there a way the lid stays propped up so I can work on the inside? There’s a little bar but that is too thin and whimsy and short to hold up that big heavy play field there also a plastic chain opposite side of the bar that is not attached to anything. What’s that for?

Think that's the way. A mate has one of these and he says it's a PITA to work on and does your back in. The wood support is better than the metal rod, Just make sure you don't knock it !

also speaking of grounding, I noticed the plug had a broken ground plug, should I fix that first?

Pinwiki will help you ID the boards, but in order of your pics; top is CPU, fourth is sound board, fifth is driver board.

Have you checked the fuses or PSU voltage yet?

i am new to probing.
with the power cord plugged in and the machine flipped on, what and where do I prob? My multimeter is the auto kind, so I guess I don’t need to set it. But what am I probing? What wires? Sorry I just don’t want to get shocked. Lol.
 
BTW, yes looks like you should have a grounding pin in that US plug. Check with someone over there though as you have two types over there yeah?

Before switching on and probing, check all your fuses to ensure none are blown (continuity check on your multi-meter) and the correct rated fuses are installed. There will be stickers and a covering card over main fuses in the machine stating what type (e.g. slo blo) and amp rating they should be. If not, check the manual.

5V check on PSU (small board with heatsink and usually an adjustable pot) using your multi-meter should be described in pinwiki.

Disconnect and re-connect all connectors to the CPU and driver boards. If board edge connectors are dirty, clean with fibreglass pen. Make a note if any are very loose fitting when sliding back onto board as pins may be squashed flat.

If no boot after that suspect CPU. Ground mods will need doing (at least those to crappy connectors near transformer - plain white wires) but in my experience, shouldn't stop a boot so again, see if you can get hold of another CPU to try in it. New ones are available as the originals are often crap @myPinballs

As @JMP has already said, they're a b*stard to work on as it's really tight in the bottom of the cabinet. I completely took my old one to bits which made it a bit easier but it can still be a bit fiddly, especially doing the ground mods.
 
Easy to see why it's not working given the corrosion around the battery. I would set that as a priority before it gets any worse. Look at the section on pinwiki for dealing with battery corrosion and replacing the affected components.

Can you see the corrosion around the battery on my pics?
Is this the battery? I thought I was looking for a coin shape? Sorry guys I’m not home from work yet to try out all the trouble shooting ideas you shared, thank you.

First thing - the mains lead is an american one.

Are you sure the game is set to 230v and not 110v ! !

It needs a new lead and a ground on it.

The old owner could of been telling you porkies that it worked. If you plugged a 110v game into 230v then it is not good.

It's it's set to 240v then there's a bigger issue, since he's in California.......

Better than i have seen some, however thats a large amount of corrosion due to the battery....

Some people repair these - however they are fairly specilist - other option is just to replace with one of the more modern options out there...

Do I transfer the eprom chips or do they come with new (blank) ones? And I would need to flash them?
 
Your board is showing typical battery corrosion for a system80. I've fixed worse but I do have a background and specialise in electronics. I normally install the reset generator and memory cap.

Given your lack of electronic experience @Karloz25 I would recommend buying the mypinballs system80B CPU board. Then proceed with the grounding mods and then checking the connectors (or do so whilst waiting for the new MPU to arrive).
 
Board has been professionally repaired and deemed “working”.

When reattached, the machine acts the same as before.
Can I get some help trouble shooting the PSU?
How and what do I probe to check correct voltage?

I know nothing about repairing Gottlieb's ,so I don't know why there is a lot of components missing or very if any solder on the top side of this board on the new parts . So the pinwiki guild is a must to check this board !

Scratch the above message as I just looked it up on pinwiki 🤔

Hey there! New user here.

I just picked up this machine and am seeing the same corrosion nearby the battery on mine. Just curious if you were able to get yours up and running.. seeing this post was from a few years ago, I'm sure it's a shot in the dark.

Haven't gone through the full troubleshooting guide yet, but noticed this pretty quickly when inspecting the machine.... everything else looks pretty solid.

Karloz hasnt been here since May22, so they might not see your message....

Yes that board doesnt look great. Most of that corrosion is the reset circuit.

@myPinballs is the expert on these, having designed and producing a replacement board - i suspect he is best placed to comment - is there any way to get a closer pic of that area at all?
