So we all have to work, it helps us all fund our silver ball addiction. The question is do you love, loathe or like your job? So for me personally it's a like/love. I'm self employed in direct sales.

The good:
1) Working by myself
2) No early starts
3) Meeting some genuinely nice people
4) A lot of free time
5) It can pay very well
6) Not stuck in an office/factory
7) Yearly competition for a fully paid 3 day holiday break in Europe
8) Being on the road

The bad:
1) People cancelling on the door when you have driven X amount of miles 😡
2) People not having an understanding of the quality you are selling, hence not having the budget
3) Some of the most ridiculous excuses for not buying 🙄
4) Bu%$hi$#ing you (I guess that's number 3 too)
5) Saying "I'll definitely ring you tomorrow" (I guess that's number 4 too)
6) No holiday pay

Love the kids. Love making a genuine difference to people’s lives. Would struggle to do a better paid job simply for the cash.

Absolutely loathe how impossible my job now is. (My current budget has dropped below £2.50 per student per term). Way too many initiatives from people who actually have never done the basic job.

Get absolute destroyed with the child protection cases. For whatever reasons I’m often the first point of contact and some of the kids go through **** you’d really never believe 😢. Probably get 1 or 2 really serious cases a year and they honestly stain your sole.

Can’t see me now doing anything else before I retire.

I work as head of marketing for a small company. They are all about giving people trust and freedom, and actually mean it. I work from home full time, which I have for quite a while now (even pre pandemic I was going in only once a month or so). All my work is online and as long as I can get my work done, they're fine with that.

We now have a four day week - all full time staff get paid a full time salary for 32 hours (part time staff were given a small salary increase as it meant everyone's hourly rate increased). We trialed it in the national UK trial a few years ago and after 6 months voted to keep it - why wouldn't you?

It's just a good company in general, we have profit share, yearly inflation increases and also yearly charity donations (we get a cheque to give to a charity of our choice - obviously mine goes to otter charities). While of course it's not perfect, it's definitely the best place I've worked for. While previously the salary wasn't really in line with the market, since the pandemic they fixed that and now I'm not sure I'd leave unless it was for a big dream role that outweighed losing the benefits I have - essentially an extra 52 days holiday isn't to be sniffed at.

As for my role - as the marketing person, i run the website, email marketing campaigns, social media, flyers and brochures, running conferences and events, editing videos, merchandise, branding, and basically anything else that's needed... It's quite intense especially with working four days (you can't afford to have a few days where you're less productive - I have to be always at 100% or I get behind very quickly). Especially as it's a small company budgets are tight and I'm expected to do a lot of work with less than full time hours and not much budget. But I love the creative aspects as well as the stats, and that I have a lot of variety, each day is a bit different - I don't think i could work for a larger marketing company where I was just focusing on one area as I'd get bored very easily. :)

One good thing about working for yourself is if you want to spend the day in your garage messing around with pinballs, you can :D
