Dude, whereabouts in the country are you? Maybe someone local could pop over and see if they can help you out.

That would be awesome, but I'm in Pembrokeshire so I don't imagine anyone is near. I think the multi-meter I got from my dad isn't reliable, so I'll try to look for a new one tomorrow and then start checking all the voltages again.

Just back from Steve’s, all voltages good. Took connectors off for a look, some burnt and some corrosion.
After a few rounds of the hokey pokey with connectors it came alive, happy days.

...and sometimes a song and a dance, and usually a lot of alcohol - both types of IPA, consumed and for cleaning

And definitely don't drink both of them to counteract a mixup - that's how you treat methanol posioning, not isopropyl poisoning
