Hi

I'm trying to remove the side rail from a modern Stern to get all the bits powder coated as I tend to do on the Sterns.

Never had a problem before but with this one the nut and bolt near the right flipper turn together. Can hold the nut but fine with a spanner but there's very little if anything to grab hold of on the head of the bolt. Have tried using mole grip pliers but even they don't work.

Here's the pics of the screw and nut holding the side rial in where they turn together and there's nothing to grip onto.

Anyone have any ideas please or is it a matter of trying to resort to drilling out the bolt?

Cheers
Greg

Long shot, but maybe try to bang a slot into the end with a flat blade screwdriver and a hammer? Least youll be able to turn the nut?

Thanks, that's not a bad idea, as long as I can keep the same slot when banging to make it deep enough and not damage the rest of the rail!

Will give it a try.

Cheers

Goal has to be to preserve your side rails above all else so

1 centre punch it then drill it out from the outside

Or

2 cut a slot into the bolt head with a dremel

Or

3 cut a slot into the inside of the bolt, put screwdriver onto it to stop it turning. Use ring spanner on nut

Or

4 cut the nut off using a cutting disc -slicing through the flat end of the inside of the bolt and nut at the same time

Lots of choices

Hacksaw from the rear side slightly into the bolt and the nut to create a groove, then hold the bolt using a small screwdriver in the groove that you make whilst undoing the nut with a spanner.

Option 3. OPTION 3 !

Use a slitting disc on a Drexel. Wear safety glasses because those little buggers go off like a bomb when they fail.

Forget all those. What u wanna do is saw a small slot into it so you can hold it with a screw driver

ai big laser would do it

Take the laser that you've already bought for Dan's solution then buy a shark. Create a head mount for said shark and attach your previously purchased laser. Buy a large aquarium and put it next to your game....fill with water.

Move your shark with it's head laser into the aquarium and get it to look at the screw head (paint a very small picture of a seal on it). Switch on the laser and get the shark to bob it's head up and down slightly (play it some music it likes) until a slot has been cut into the screw. Take your screwdriver and unscrew

Pretty easy when you think about it @robotgreg don't know what all the fuss is about :D

I had a similar problem getting one of the siderails of my Met.

If all of the other screws are out, GENTLY pull the siderail away from the machine (slide a flat head screwdriver underneath as well if needed) while unbolting the nut. The extra tension should give enough purchase to grip. IF you damage the siderail at all can be simply bent back to shape with a pair of pliers. Scratches won't matter as you're powder coating anyway. If you C#ck it up completely I've got a set of Stern siderails awaiting purchase.

Or go with Chris's idea - seems a winner

Well yeah obviously but I didn't want to teach Greg to suck eggs

two questions spring to mind - what kind of seal, and what kind of music. you don't want to be getting that kind of thing wrong, not with a large aquarium housing a shark with a head-mounted laser in it, no siree.

you'd be asking for trouble

That's a bit overcomplicated. Why not just pour some petrol on the cab and set fire to it, then just wait for the flames to die down a couple of hours later and retrieve the side rails. Should have no problems undoing the bolt once that wood is cleared out of the way .

Cheers for all the advice. Thankfully didn't need to resort to laser or shark as wedged screwdriver between nut and cab and that stopped the screw moving.

Was still stuck in there after removing the rail so think must have been wedged in there but now out and can get on getting powder coating arranged.

Cheers
