Flip Out London - Thursday night league

Command and Conquer – Conrad Chambers crushes competition

In a rare week where top players and Pinball Republic stalwarts Vince, Simpson and McRae were all absent, it was a golden opportunity for league participants to move up a few places and perhaps for a new winner to snatch weekly league honours.

The fast-improving Conrad Chambers was the man to take full advantage, with top scores of 1.1M on Nine Ball and 19M on Bride of Pinbot alongside an array of other great efforts (TNA 1.2M). He has been storming up the table this season - hearty congratulations to Conrad for his first (I believe) weekly league win!

Graham Swaffield, top scoring on Indy (431M) and Earthshaker (3M), with 94M on Addams as well - swooped into second spot while showing off some of his smooth pinball skills. Another timely reminder of what the Swaff is capable of on his day.

Third was Rayne Passmore who leapt far above his ‘normal’ midtable position – Passmore has the ability, as shown by his stellar third place behind Rich Mallett and David Tucker in the PBR weekender target matchplay comp, and on this evening he managed a consistently good set of games.

Skywalker Hamill placed 4th (Addams 96M) – he’s also back on form – and nice to see a welcome return to the upper places as well for Robin Kemp in 5th who took Consistency Champ honours this week. Ben Pike @Ben-P was 6th in another decent effort – he’s been playing better of late as well, could he keep this up and steal a playoff spot? It’s certainly possible… Last week’s champ Anton Stewart took 7th - but he’ll feel he could have done better. Similar for Yuen Aw (TNA 1.9M) who remains on a post PBR weekender slump in 8th – coming dead last on Bride of Pinbot did not help matters. The silver lining for him is that he beat John Boffin (joint 14th), who is thankfully less chatty this week. Not a bad performance from the Boff again though.

The Bushes (Clive 9th, Diane 12th) reverted closer back to the mean after their top 8 performances last week; The talented Fowler brothers had a night to forget with both in the bottom half, Dave with an inexplicable 20th place finish (although Anton believes the beers were to blame!) although James did have a strong top score of 891M on Demo Man. In other news, Claire Lickman (18th) improved a bit from the previous week, but in contrast it was a nightmare evening for David “Big Time” Bowery – who just two weeks after battling Matt Vince in a top 16 playoff tournament battle, found himself propping up the PBR league table this week.

Finally, as predicted in last week’s report, Charlie Lawn (19th) did have a much better week to jump a few places off the bottom – he put in a stunning 118M on Walking Dead in a Charlie Magic moment to take top score honours here.

Well played everyone, on to next week. Matt, Neil, Stan and Nick seem nailed on for playoff spots, with Anton, Conrad and Graham also making very strong claims. That’s already 7 spots looking tough to break into, however there’s still 4 weeks left and plenty of pinball left to go!

Overall Standings need to be amended as it looks like Nick Hamill has participated in 4 meets, assuming Nick Hamill and Nick Hammil are the same Nick @Nickoss II

Thanks @Hullshark - I had enjoyed being in 4th place for a very short while, now it turns out to be an admin error!! 🤣

Much like a school report - must try harder next week! 🙂

InVinceible: Matt wins yet again
PBR league 9th June 2022

Matthew Vince once again took weekly PBR league honours by rolling Embryon (1.2M) and top scoring on Whirlwind (6.1M) – continuing his incredible streak of winning every single league week he has attended. That’s now four meets in a row – giving him 4000 league points and ensuring a direct finals spot for the umpteenth time. He also took time out recently to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by winning the PBR Royal Rumble. No wonder they call the man “The Machine”…

In second place this week with a tremendous performance was Rayne “Wildcard” Passmore – a fitting nickname for a variety of reasons(!). With regards to pinball alone – Rayne Passmore has put in some impressive performances of late (this time top scoring on Judge Dredd Super game with 645M and Dirty Harry - 528M) and this could be the start of him becoming a serious playoff contender. He currently sits in 9th place in the league, just one place outside the playoffs with easily beatable scores to improve upon.

Yuen Aw (Corvette - 1.7 Billion) righted the ship with a sorely needed consistent performance in third. His play has been lackluster this season but this strong finish will give a boost to his own playoff chances. Normally in the top 4 qualifiers – he’s hanging onto the 8th spot and with so many improved players in contention will need a couple more strong weeks to ensure his playoff participation.

Brad Attwood took a solid 5th in only his second visit of the season to PBR league – it’ll be tough for him to qualify for the league top 8 but don’t count him out just yet. Tying for 6th, Nick Hamill and Graham Swaffield. Nick came top in both White Water and Guardians, strangely getting great scores of 337M in both games (but it looks like no Steward’s enquiry will be required). The wily Swaffield secured his spot with a signature 195M top score on one of his favoured games, Metallica. Both these gents are sitting pretty at 4th and 5th in the league table.
Tying for the 8th spot this week were Anton and Conrad Chambers– both also shoring up their playoff positions.

In other news, Mark Johnsonn managed a 50M hadron collect on Guardians to impressively bring his score to 148M; the Boff John Boffin maintained his recent improved and decent play – 14th this week after a stellar 9th last week… shrewd followers of the league may note that on both occasions regular playing partner Ben Leigh was not present… @Ben-P and Bigdave Fowler slumped after strong weeks in their previous visits. And finally, relative rookie Scott Taylor put in his best performance of the season to beat 3 others and take down 160 league points. Well done Scott!

Join us next week when Ben Leigh will be back in action – how will this affect the play of Boffin 2.0? Will the Bushes build on their recent solid play after a week off and get back into the playoff picture? Can anyone stop “the Machine” from steamrolling through another league week and taking his win streak to 5? The gauntlet has been thrown – we’ll see if anyone else can deliver next Thursday!

Who has won this sweltering Thursday?

That's for me to know, and you to work out! Rearrange the letters, and the league table is yours.

I'll put a proper table up on Saturday (probably), but in the mean time, have a guess people!

Well done A word, bad tot!

Attwood leaps into playoff contention

The end of June marks Pinball Republic’s last league in its current format, and the end of an era. There is one last chance for PBR contenders to walk away with perhaps a first ever league title, or mark the end of the hard fought league formats with a final victory. Sadly the intrigue, longevity and nuance of the current league will be gone, but the positive news is that we will be moving to a faster paced series of standalone tournaments each week including Best game, PinGolf and Flip Frenzy formats which will be exciting for sure and give those who cannot make it regularly a real chance to contend for the top places on any given evening.

In last week’s write up it was mentioned that the gifted Brad Attwood would have an uphill battle to qualify for the league playoffs – last night however, in the absence of Vince and McRae, Brad won a 3 way fight at the top to take 1000 points and suddenly, a playoff place looks his for the taking. Brad smashed up Avatar for a top score of 40M, put 323M on White Water and was not fazed by Spooky with an excellent 4.1M. The man with the puzzles, Hamill took 2nd – top scoring on Avengers (113M) and solidifying his top 4 spot. Aw grabbed third for the 2nd straight week and this should strongly bolster his playoff hopes that were previously hanging by a thread. The in-form Swaffield placed 4th, with Rayne grabbing another high placing in 5th (top scores on Goldeneye 585M and Genie 390K). Chambers continues to play well, taking 6th with Dave Fowler (Led Zep 217M) and Dark Horse Reed back to round out the top 8 with joint 7th finishes.

Elsewhere in the table, Stan the Man gave others a chance to shine this week in 10th – he’s still looking good at second overall in the league; well done to rookie Scott Taylor (18th), who is keen to improve and made a good start with a tremendous top score of 365K on Harlem. It remains to be seen if someone will make him a weekly high score trophy a la Armen Lloyd… (!) Finally there was yet another Charlie Magic moment with a stonking 1.692B on No fear propelled him to a joint 11th placing.

I can’t make it next week – good luck to everyone and it will be interesting to see if anyone can derail the Matt Vince train or make a late playoff bid with an outstanding performance!

Was great to have my first visit to Pinball Republic tonight. What an awesome selection of pins. Had great fun on some of the older games, many of which I hadn't even seen before.
Cheers to Stan for giving me the heads on the league, and @Diane B to coming to my aid when I kept getting a ball stuck on Batman Forever.
Great to meet some new people. See you at Swavesy in a couple of weeks 👍

Here are the overall standings for May-June. Next week is your last chance to move up the table or even make it into the finals!

Vince draws fitting curtain on PBR league

League report 30th June 2022

The “Machine” Matt Vince rose above the rest once again to win on finals night and take honours in Pinball Republic’s final league season.
In a fitting send off, the last 4 men standing were club legends Vince, McRae, Simpson and Hamill to duke it out in the final on Dirty Harry to decide the May/June and final league champion. Hamill looked to take the early advantage, deftly collecting two multiballs on the same ball – but Matt was just too strong, with the final scores Matt 400M+ (on two balls), Nick in the low 300Ms, Stan 274 and Neil just over 100M. Congratulations to Matt, who opened up this league season with an incredible 4 straight league wins and remains the man to beat at Pinball Republic. Others can, and have beaten the UK number 3, but that extra level of consistency and calmness to save a bad game on ball 3 still gives him a slight edge over the rest of our league.

Going back to the weekly league results and battle for the playoffs – Big Dave Fowler put in a monster performance to coast to victory. Freed from the shackles of playoff qualification stress, he put up huge score after huge score (Top scores on Corvette – 2.4Billion, Galaxy 639K, and 2nd places on ACDC -75M and Blackout 405K.) An excellent evening for this talented player. Neil McRae (Spirit 705K, Skateball 570K) snatched 2nd with a clutch performance to claim a direct spot in the finals. Yuen Aw also played well to secure his playoff spot in third, jumping to 5th overall in the standings, with Anton Stewart nonchalantly taking 4thand the final playoff place whilst only opting to play one ball on Spirit (205K) – he says due to time constraints, others say due to standard “Combo King” showing off(!)

Diane Bush finished up an excellent league season with a 5thplace finish, whilst top scoring on Skateball (715K). Diane’s improved play over recent weeks took her to 12th overall and to the fringe of the playoff race. Stan took 6th, Matt 7thand Tony Greenwood repeated his 8th place finish for the second straight week. “Now I’m getting better, they’re stopping the league!” quipped Tony, clearly very pleased with another strong performance.

Conrad Chambers (12th this week) was the unlucky man to just miss out on the playoffs in 9th, with the in form threat of James Reed also very unfortunate to miss out on a likely playoff place due to Covid.
Other quick shout outs – Owen Lloyd with another top 10 finish in 9th overall, new member Charlie Puttick taking 11thplace for easily his best finish ever; Charlie Lawn taking a nice midtable joint 16th; and Adam Bidwell with a solid 18th. Ethan Campbell also did a nice job to finish 22nd and beat 8 others.
To complete the playoff picture, Aw, Attwood, Swaffield and Stewart battled in the quarter finals on Godzilla. Yuen managed to beat Gigan and Ebirah for a nice 612M, with Attwood also playing strongly with 240M after 2 balls. Anton could not get too much going and finished on around 60M. However the determined Swaffield was not done yet, and on ball three passed the 200M mark alongside a chorus of “MOTHRA…!” and support from the fans - before draining just shy of having to make Brad play again.

In a nervy semifinal on No fear, Attwood and Aw got off to relatively slow starts and were just unable to overcome the experienced Simpson and Hamill, who finished in the 500M range, vs Brad and Yuen’s 400M+ range – with multiball quality making the difference. A close one, but this set the stage for Matt, Neil, Stan and Nick to battle one more time, with Mr. Vince taking the spoils and bringing the illustrious Pinball Republic/Flip Out league seasons to a close.

Thanks to all those who have competed in the leagues over the years, it has been a whole lot of good humoured fun, with friendly and fantastic competition all the way. Also appreciate those of you who have been reading along and supporting these write ups. Hopefully I’ll still continue reporting in some capacity as we move to the new tournament formats.

See some of you next week as we kick off the exciting new tournament series with a Best Game format + finals!
