Just back from a great day at Electruc Circus. Huge thanks to @steve brum for hosting and @Genotime for all his hard work organising and running things.

I had a brilliant day, finished 6th in the tournament, and 2nd in the high score blast. Congrats to @Wayne J on his high score win, and to @mufcmufc for his tournament victory. Great play by Nick in both the semi and final, a deserved winner.

One of my personal highlights was a great battle with @Jackpot on Stranger Things, when we were both battling for an automatic final spot. Yuen played a great final ball and won on the bonus, a superb, gutsy performance. It was great to see so many people at the event, and I hope it's the first of many 👍

Great event again. Top marks to Gene, Steve and anyone else involved. Sorry Ian and I had to dash before finals wrapped up to make sure trains were not missed.

Great to see some new faces there too amongst the usual friendly bunch. Looking forward to the next one 😁

Here are the results.

Congrats to Nick Marshall for the victory, big thanks to Steve and all the EC crew for hosting and thanks to everyone who came. Hope you all enjoyed yourselves. Bit of a stressful start but think it chugged along ok once it got going.

Great day.
Competition ran smoothly and the food was great as well.

@Genotime and @steve brum were great hosts.

The only criticism about the comp at all was that the matchplay software wasn't great at allocating random machines or players.
Over 12 rounds I played the same 2 machines twice, numerous competitors I played against twice and one of them 3 times.
I heard the same thing from plenty of other people too.
You would think that with 25 or so games available, 59 competitors it would be able to do better.

I didn't have any repeat machines but played 5 players twice, 1 player 3 times and 1 player 4 times!

There's an option in Matchplay for 'balanced' pairing which tries to reduce the chance of replaying someone you've already met. There's a fair chance @Genotime might have had it on pure 'random' pairing

Edit: I'd also be tempted to try a 'tiered Swiss' pairing, which basically starts of with randomly allocated groups, but then slowly narrows the groups over the course of the comp so that you're paired with people 'at your level'. It might produce some interesting groups of the top seeded players, but that might also have an impact on how long it takes for those games to complete I suppose. The other upside is that those of us that are having a bad day can at least have some closer games with other people also having a bad day :D

But either way - it's a great fun comp as it is can't thank Gene enough for the effort :)

Just adding our thanks for a brilliant day 😃
Thanks to Steve for hosting, Gene for running the tourney and all the other helpers.
A really great atmosphere with such a lovely bunch of pinheads!
Well done to all the winners 👍
Di & Clive

Machines are set to be balanced - though there's possibility of playing the same one.

Player pairings are set for random. So it's truly a random throw of the dice each time. I personally like it - in line with the random nature of EC and part of the building new friendships/rivalries narrative.

Perhaps for more 'serious' competitions it's good to have a system where you know you're likely to only play each player once/even amount of times but I think its nice to have that random element in for fun.

If the overall majority don't like this aspect I will think about changing it in the future- but randomness working as intended.

Many thanks to Steve for hosting and Gene for running the comp very smoothly. Great fun! Well done to Nick on the win and to Andy for crushing AFM in the quarters.

Re Wayne's matchplay comment, I've found this very often that the software is not a great as some would have it. You would have thought with 59 players and only playing 36 players over the 12 rounds, it would be pretty simple for it to esnure that you only play one player or machine once. However, as Wayne said I also played several people twice.

I've experienced thsi dupl;aication of machines/players in every comp that I've played in which has been run by Matchplay software. I'm really surprised that with it being the "go to" and possibly only option for running comps automatically that it hasn't been developed better. I think we're stuck with it unless you do it manually but it is far from perfect and the amazing product that some would purport!

its an unmeasurable amount of times better than doing it manually - it means you get more pinball time rather than fixing errors in Excel and doing it manually.
