I'll vouch for that! The same sound module in my Gold Ball is the only bit of pinball machine I haven't managed to fix yet. Tricky little bugger. Hence why I said to factor in at least a potential £50-75 cost for a replacement (going on 2nd-hand eBay prices for working/tested/refurbed items).

But @myPinballs, my pack of ten AY-3-8910A PSG sound chips arrived yesterday from China, so I'm now only short of a working 6808 or 6802 to fix my -51 module. The chips appear to me genuine NOS unused GI stock, pins still flared and no insertion marks. I tested one last night in my Arduino test circuit and it sang like a canary! Noticeably louder and clearer than the old one. Hopefully I got quite a bargain as they were only £11 posted for all ten.

Chips from china can be a bit hit and miss. Some are rejects re-screened, others appear to be old surplus stock (maybe from lost warehouses!).

If you need a 6802 ic then i can help you out. pm me.

I hear ya on the dodgy Chinese chips! Whilst we all like saving money I know that cheap usually means rubbish, like fitting naff capacitors in the power supplies instead of decent Panasonics, etc. And modern semiconductors are so cheap it wouldn't be worth it saving a few pennies in case they were re-screened rejects. That's all fine for components that are still made today (and better than they used to be) but for obsolete chips decades old what to do? I could buy from a UK company and they could still be duff even if NOS. The main difference is £1 vs £5-34 each (from current listings on eBay).

I've got ten 6802s on their way. I am right in thinking they're the CPUs with built-in memory so I won't need the U10 6810? One less old chip to go wrong. Hopefully the 6802s will be good too and I can get some sounds going! Pinball really isn't much fun without sound.

I woudn't risk anything non current from the chinese sellers.

I challenge you to buy a 2n3055, I bet you can't.

I mean from a chinese ebayer!

just pop the old one open... solder in a 2n3904 and you have a new one!

I'm a bit confused @abaxas and @lukewells. Did you mean to say "I woudn't risk anything current from the chinese sellers"? I can buy 10 x 2N3055 from CPC or highly rated UK eBayers (for exactly the same price as it turns out - 78p/each). I could get 10 for £5.99 from Hong Kong but the £1.80 saving isn't worth it on device that's still under production. But the long discontinued GI AY-2-8910 sound chips are either going to be second-hand or NOS, so I'm happy to get them for a good price albeit long 3-4 week wait. I can't imagine that something as obscure as an ancient 8-bit sound chip would be economically remade or re-badged. Too much effort for too little gain. I can understand flogging hacked 2N3055s - even though they're from the 70s too there's still enough of a demand that they're still manufactured new.

I've bought many a 2n3055 from dodgy ebay sellers that could take about 100ma before going bang.

Yes you can get them at Farnell CPC now for pence because multicomp make cheap versions of them, but there was a time when they were £3-£4 each, hence risking it on ebay was (theoretically) worth it.

It's nice that in some cases the supply of older components actually increases, Element 14 has helped with that :)

I doubt they would remake them, but they may resell rejects from the original manufacture, or sell ones that were badly stored in the first place, or as i mentioned before they may be fine and found in previously lost warehouses. Its always a lottery, so if they are cheap enough worth a gamble.

That's my thinking. I could buy obsolete chips for £5-10 each (can't believe someone is selling an AY-3-8910 for £34.99 on eBay!) and I've no better guarantee than £1 each from China.

I took a punt on a listing for 5 x SONY 6800 for £1.59. No further info or photo. Turns out they were NOS Motorola MC6800P CPUs originally destined for a life in a Sony VIEWDATA TERMINAL. Now mine for 32p each! So I ordered 10 more ;)

The Spectrum on eBay with an opening price of £700 secured 1 bid shortly before the auction closed yesterday.

It was relisted within half an hour with an opening price of £600.

I think the point is.... if someone can make a few bob by selling counterfeit or dodgy goods they will.

The chinese sellers don't give a monkey's and ebay doesnt too.

Another account in the Durham area. Wonder why he chooses to use that area as the item location?

Are we sure this is the same fraudster by the way?

And what a clever little sh!t. He's blocked me from bidding, obviously copy and pasted my username from his last auction. Reported and dealt with.

That STTNG has been on and off eBay at that price for the last 3 months if not longer. You'd think the seller would take the hint "its not selling because I'm expecting too much" or just keep it and save the listing fees!

Looking at eBay sales history they have gone for well over 3k in other countries and about 2.5k to 2.7k in the UK recently, so he's not that far off the mark but because it's not in superb condition I doubt he'll get that price.

The listing has been removed. Do you recall the seller's ID for future reference?

I thought these always went for silly money? At least he put up lots and lots of close-up photos of Google Drive and hasn't mentioned that it's "probably just a fuse" away from being a total minter :p

I think £3k is beyond silly for a STTNG. It's a popular machine and a great player (I've enjoyed the heck out of mine anyway) but I'd say £3k is a bit optimistic, even for a minter, which this one certainly isn't.

I know there was a bit of a price rise on them a year or two ago that took them into the £2k - 2500 range for a while on eBay (not sure if any sold at that even then though), which I think people said was due to their high IPDB rating vs comparitively low price at the time <insert pinch of salt here>. However I can't see any reason for another price jump - They're not rare by any means and theres nothing going on to suddenly make the theme more desirable like a new film/ series or anything.

If I could get £3k for mine it'd be out the door, great player or not. Heck I'll add it to my sig, see if I can get a TZ or TAF for it ;)

Yep there was the 'Jamma+ effect' a couple of years ago when for some unknown reason the vid kids decided it was the greatest machine on God's earth at any price.

I'd say now ......rough but working 1600, average 1800, very nice 2kish+

For me still a 2k max game unless it's absolutely fantastic. A little bit more than Creature etc. Good game but not up there with the 3 grand ones.

On another note what exactly is a "back up copy" of a TAF manual? A photocopy for £100 and then why the pics of a game?

Problem with the STTNG is it's ugly and heavy and the music gets on yer titties, otherwise it's a decent title, wasn't that long ago I purchased my 1st one for £600, what happened?
