But @myPinballs, my pack of ten AY-3-8910A PSG sound chips arrived yesterday from China, so I'm now only short of a working 6808 or 6802 to fix my -51 module. The chips appear to me genuine NOS unused GI stock, pins still flared and no insertion marks. I tested one last night in my Arduino test circuit and it sang like a canary! Noticeably louder and clearer than the old one. Hopefully I got quite a bargain as they were only £11 posted for all ten.

I hear ya on the dodgy Chinese chips! Whilst we all like saving money I know that cheap usually means rubbish, like fitting naff capacitors in the power supplies instead of decent Panasonics, etc. And modern semiconductors are so cheap it wouldn't be worth it saving a few pennies in case they were re-screened rejects. That's all fine for components that are still made today (and better than they used to be) but for obsolete chips decades old what to do? I could buy from a UK company and they could still be duff even if NOS. The main difference is £1 vs £5-34 each (from current listings on eBay).Chips from china can be a bit hit and miss. Some are rejects re-screened, others appear to be old surplus stock (maybe from lost warehouses!).
If you need a 6802 ic then i can help you out. pm me.

I woudn't risk anything non current from the chinese sellers.
I challenge you to buy a 2n3055, I bet you can't.
I mean from a chinese ebayer!
just pop the old one open... solder in a 2n3904 and you have a new one!
I'm a bit confused @abaxas and @lukewells. Did you mean to say "I woudn't risk anything current from the chinese sellers"? I can buy 10 x 2N3055 from CPC or highly rated UK eBayers (for exactly the same price as it turns out - 78p/each). I could get 10 for £5.99 from Hong Kong but the £1.80 saving isn't worth it on device that's still under production. But the long discontinued GI AY-2-8910 sound chips are either going to be second-hand or NOS, so I'm happy to get them for a good price albeit long 3-4 week wait. I can't imagine that something as obscure as an ancient 8-bit sound chip would be economically remade or re-badged. Too much effort for too little gain. I can understand flogging hacked 2N3055s - even though they're from the 70s too there's still enough of a demand that they're still manufactured new.

That's my thinking. I could buy obsolete chips for £5-10 each (can't believe someone is selling an AY-3-8910 for £34.99 on eBay!) and I've no better guarantee than £1 each from China. Its always a lottery, so if they are cheap enough worth a gamble.

I took a punt on a listing for 5 x SONY 6800 for £1.59. No further info or photo. Turns out they were NOS Motorola MC6800P CPUs originally destined for a life in a Sony VIEWDATA TERMINAL. Now mine for 32p each! So I ordered 10 more![]()
That STTNG has been on and off eBay at that price for the last 3 months if not longer. You'd think the seller would take the hint "its not selling because I'm expecting too much" or just keep it and save the listing fees!If this "slightly-foxed" STTNG sells for 3k, mines going up the next day...

The listing has been removed. Do you recall the seller's ID for future reference? And what a clever little sh!t. He's blocked me from bidding, obviously copy and pasted my username from his last auction. Reported and dealt with.
I thought these always went for silly money? At least he put up lots and lots of close-up photos of Google Drive and hasn't mentioned that it's "probably just a fuse" away from being a total minterIf this "slightly-foxed" STTNG sells for 3k, mines going up the next day...

Yep there was the 'Jamma+ effect' a couple of years ago when for some unknown reason the vid kids decided it was the greatest machine on God's earth at any price.I think £3k is beyond silly for a STTNG. It's a popular machine and a great player (I've enjoyed the heck out of mine anyway) but I'd say £3k is a bit optimistic, even for a minter, which this one certainly isn't.
I know there was a bit of a price rise on them a year or two ago that took them into the £2k - 2500 range for a while on eBay (not sure if any sold at that even then though), which I think people said was due to their high IPDB rating vs comparitively low price at the time <insert pinch of salt here>. However I can't see any reason for another price jump - They're not rare by any means and theres nothing going on to suddenly make the theme more desirable like a new film/ series or anything.
If I could get £3k for mine it'd be out the door, great player or not. Heck I'll add it to my sig, see if I can get a TZ or TAF for it![]()
LOL! Makes you think they're all 13 years old, but in reality the only vid kids that can afford £2k+ on a pinball machine and know what a Jamma is are all WAY over 40vid kids
