Complete Centaur - Wreck of a project

I have discovered the joy of cleaning mechs. previously ive attempted to replace drop targets in-situ on the underside of the playfield. what a silly idea. Much better to desolder and remove, then take it all apart and do it properly. One of the ones i did today was full of nearly 40 years of grime and gunge. the old targets are so dirty they won’t even clean up nicely. going in the bin (or ebay [emoji23][emoji23])

A late night last night prepping for the overlay stick down. It took ages to line the overlay up, as predicted on pin side it doesn’t quite line up, so I concentrated on getting all the inserts spot on, and they are.

Stuck down last night. I woke up at 4.00 am this morning and decided to crack on with cutting out the holes, a laborious job. Just finished 3 hours later

Also marked all the holes using the template I made yesterday.

Later today I’ll do the clear coating.

Hello there this is looking great can I ask what are you using to clear coat? And how are you applying it? Always wondered how hard it is to do?

Just out of a rattle can, automotive 2k. The first two coats were light, then a medium, then two full coats. 35 min intervals as it was cold in my garage.

It's incredibly satisfying, and you did a bang up job there! The things you find when you take it entirely to pieces is amazing, in comparison to trying to do it from the top! And then when they are just the right "weight" to drop them...

THAT said, in scale, if you are hit by a giant steel boulder, you're going down! :)

Great job on the clear too! I can also sympathise with the 4am wake up and crack on method!!

I did my sons bonnet this summer the same way and after a flat with 2000 grade sand paper and a machine cut and polish it came out really smooth.
Then he sold the car😂
Nothing wrong with cans if you are careful.
Looking good👍

Loving your work Alan !! Doing a super job ! . Spaying clear coat I found is not easy ,but if if there is any imperfections it can be sanded down and polished out as @M4carp did above or re apply some more clear coat !!

The cab isn’t too bad. doesn’t warrant a full strip and restencil. but quite a few issues to sort.

I have spent the morning removing scrapes and blemishes with a magic eraser. It’s cleaned off a lot of marks. Next to work on chunks missing and paint missing

New coil arrived from Germany. It came with the coil sleeve which was inserted the wrong way round for my needs. it was stuck in, so had to destroy it to get it out, then had to hammer a replacement one in the right way round very tight fit.

started putting the underside of the playfield back together. noticed a bit on the end of the flipper pawl missing, looked around for it. it’s not in my boxes of bits, so i guess it must have been lost a long time ago. (also checked the bottom of the cabinet-not there)

Andy(pinballmania),sells replacements for those pawls, your end of stroke leaf looks bent as well, probably an op lash up from years ago

yes it’s a switch off a pop bumper that’s been used on a flipper. they’ve bent the spoon out of the way [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

i’ve got flipper rebuild kits on the way anyway.

@AlanJ got a link to the rattle can clear you used? I'm toying with this instead of a playfield protector for when I've touched up my Lucky Strike

5-6 feature lights out so i need to investigate those. sound ok but not with the new sound effects card. so tgat also needs looking at

the pf won’t drop into the cabinet smoothly. i readjusted the lock down receiver but still no joy. need to look at those rear hinge points and brackets as there is something not right ( it was a tight squeeze when i got it so something wrong with the alignment.

now it’s [emoji485] time

I am a late convert to Centaur. Lots of folk moan about it being too easy to secure multiballs - but you can adjust this in the dip settings.

I think it has the best rules ruleset of the vintage, high watermark Bally SS titles, before the 1982 cost cutting ruined everhlything.

Cracking progress  What are the safety precautions on that spray 2K, isn't it a bit dodgy?

Lamp driver issues! Quite a few feature lamps not working. going through methodically one by one fixing them. pcb headers are cracked so reflow sorted out 3 of the lamps. rest look like blown SCRs.

Didn’t help that my “known working spare” board seems to have a duff SCR too. so two boards to repair tonight.
