I have to say that the negative reactions to this offering has taken me by surprise. Here’s why…
Stern Premium machines generally cost more than £1000 more than the Pro versions, although they are essentially the same game, with pretty much the same ruleset, but with the addition of some figurines or a ramp or a playfield mech etc. The LE versions are often much more expensive than the Premiums, but are essentially exactly the same but for some cosmetic enhancements..
This Lyman update is much more, in my view, than a jump from Pro to Premium, because it adds new features to the code, as well as adding a couple of new minor playfield elements. So in my view the ability to upgrade CCr from the original offering to the Lyman version for £1200 or so is way more enticing than choosing a Premium Stern over a Pro version.
It would be difficult to make the case that the enhancements of most Premium Sterns actually cost an extra £1000 or so. I suspect that the actual cost of developing the new code and hardware for CCr will be closer to £1000 per kit sold than the extra cost to make each Premium Stern is. I have no way of knowing for sure if that’s true, but I do know that developing software is not cheap.
So to me the price of £1250 or so for the upgrade seems entirely fair for a pinball upgrade.
The reason I bought CCr was I figured at some point down the line I would be able to upgrade it to the Lyman version at about this price and get a deeper, harder game, and now here it is. So on that basis, I’m IN!!
I’m sure some will disagree with my thoughts, and that’s cool. It would be fascinating to know what percentage of all the remake machines that exist are upgraded with a new code.
