Now sorted, it was indeed the deadworld switch connector wired incorrectly to another one as described by @Pick Holder

It's what happens when people upgrade with the deadworld mod to hold captured balls as per the prototype game. There two of the same connectors next to each other and people just think that they are both for that when only one is used and the second connector is further round to the left. The colour of the wires matching or not are the clue to this problem along with multiple switch faults. It is most likely why the game got sold in the first place.
