Why do some users have a Union Jack flag in their avatar?

It shows where you're connecting to the site from. It can be disabled in the user preferences (as I've done since I often browse from the corp VPN which is in IE).
I also noticed yesterday where it normally says site supporter or registered user that someones said king for the day, what’s that all about
