Hi all,

Do any of you have any recomendations for a budget orbital sander? Also which grade pads?

I shall be using it on the rear of my play field to get it up to looking new and also eventually be doing the cabinet later in the year.

Any help/info/tips/guides would be great! Especially for the playfield cleaning on the rear as thats my next job!

Cheers in advance

What's your approx. budget Dunc? A tip with the pads is to get the Screwfix ones rather than branded ones - they're are probably not quite as durable, but are a fraction of the price and come in a few different grades.

well, tbh, when i say budget, i mean not like a pro £500 self extracting jobbie lol. More around the sub £50 if there is one? It's not going to get alot of use

Im wanting to clean the rear of the playfield to make the wood look all new again. I have a mouse sander, but no sure if that would do the trick as there are some areas that have stained due to the metal rusting. I know that i might not get it all out, but i though a good old sanding would sort it to an extent! lol

how would you reccomend cleaning the rear of the playfield?

Oh its wood then, I thought you meant sand the art at the rear of the pf

Post some photos lot on here will help you.

Some folks will say spend the extra cash and get a decent Makita/DeWalt/Bosch, etc., but unless you're going to use it all day, every day budget tools for home DIY use can be just as good. I've got several tools made by FERM; two cordless drills, an SDS drill, scroll saw and random orbit sander, all of which I've been very pleased with. Put the sander through it's paces recently building a custom computer desk for my son's bedroom. Made light work of gettting a super smooth finish ready for black satin paint. Just like a pinball cabinet!

Cost around £30-35, but keep you're eye out for special offers around £25. Here's link for one currently on eBay for £32.99 with free delivery:

Ahh cheers Nedreud!

That's exactly the sort of budget I was hoping for and as you have experience of one too is brilliant.

Will get one bought!

What grit pads would people suggest for the underside of the playfield? Remember it's just to sand it back so it looks new. 240??

Something like 240 would be good. The FERM comes with 6 discs (2xP60, 2xP80, 2xP120) but the P60 and P80 are both a bit vicious! Probably fine to start with the P120. It's got speed control, so set it low till you get used to the action. Also, start with the disc on the wood then switch it on else the pad starts to spin and will gouge in when placed on the wood. When running the disc just vibrates randomly and doesn't spin.

Cheers Nedreud! Will definatly buy one! Will also pick up some P240 pads. Are the Orbital Sanders a standard sort of size? As in all use the same sanding pads?
