What are these wires for?

Oddly enough to start with when I powered on it was blowing a fuse, the second time I noticed a coil engerized and stayed on then bam blow fuse, so I disconnected the coil in question the ball launch and now at least no longer do I get blow fuses, just some coils not working at all.

I did check the coils and wires all look to be ok with no shorts, so figure it may be a board issue.

As for the flashers there are a bunch of disconnected (chopped) wires, I think its safe to reconnect but I will upload a photo this week end to get 2nd and 3rd opinions.

Ill also check out Tommy manual pg37.

I had the exact same problem with the Laser Kick coil sticking on and continually blowing PPB F5 and its associated PPB driving transistor. It turned out though the coil resistance measured good it wasn't good once exercised (@Moonraker advice). When you removed the ball launch coil - did it have two thicker power wires (hence not the end of the string) and if so did you leave them connected together? It could be the driving transistor is shorted as that would cause it to lock on. I'm not sure exactly what coil you're referring to but if its 'auto ball launch' thats Q44 on the CPU board so worth checking that (or whichever one it is!)

Julian's problem is battery acid damage on the MPU. I wouldn't switch the game on until that's been resolved as it may lead to further complications...

OK, well I have incoming PPB, PSB & CPU board, I know its madness but I've wanted a Tommy for ever.

I've already stripped the playfield down and cleaned it, it was so filthy I would not have played it even if it was working, its pretty OK now though clean is the main, some of the inserts are starting to show their outlines, and one in the very back right is raised ever so slightly.
I don't think these will be problems in a home environment.

If I came across a NOS playfield I'd jump on it.

BTW This is my first attempt at shopping a machine, the big question is can I get it all put back together.

I plan to put all the plastics, ramps and everything topside of the playfield back together, then tackle the underside.

I am ordering coils (so things like flippers and VUK are nice and strong), flipper re-build kits (current left flipper is missing the nubbin that kicks in the EOS), switches (for missing switches), a knocker, the odd new plastic, tommy mirror decal & LEDs.
I've heard that 'gaze balls' are a great topper replacement.

Then I'll start on the backbox, by installing all the new boards, re-crimping GI-killed molex connectors, new speakers & sub.

Oh DMD plastic is all bent from heat so that needs replacing as does the DMD I think.

So yeah this machine was a pile of ****e!

After that I'll empty the cabinet & backbox and get someone to refurb the wood and apply new decals.

Oh I also have a Pinsound board for re-orchestration of the sound & music.

I told you madness!!!

But once done it will either be a really nice and saved Tommy or I'll hate the game!

Any and all help and advise is welcome.

OK, well I have incoming PPB, PSB & CPU board,

That should fix the acid damage then! At least you have a known good starting point and you can keep and enjoy the machine for years to come. As you said above you should start a shop log and post plenty of photos.

Good luck.

Awesome, thanks, I will have a few questions, I need to take photos for that though.

Grizz,

After a weekend of Tommy work I do have a couple of questions;

1. The ball deflector on the very rear of the playfield, is this just a mini pop up little post thing?
Reason I ask is on line I have found this;

http://tinyurl.com/q8aymml

Which looks nothing like what I have got there to deflect the ball, its rather just a pop up plastic that simply stops the ball in its tracks, not that I've tested the game yet as its in bits.

2. I have some flasher wires that have been cut, these are the 4 flashers on the rear board, seen with be holding the 2 wires.
So the black and blue (I think) is the same as the other black and blue wire heading off into the wiring harness, I presume its a simple matter of re-connecting.
But why do I have 2 further orange wires that are cut? They appear to go to other flashers, what I don't understand is why do I have 3 orange wires! Surely it should be like the black 1 to 1.
Can you please take a photo / loot at your machine and let me know what you think?

3. Finally, I also have two connectors that are not plugged in and don't appear to have anything to plug into, any idea what they are? Also does your machine have these?

Many thanks

Hi Julian

1. Yes. Just a white plastic post that pops up to deflect ball into pop area at certain points in game. Not sure what/where that BAA part goes !

2. This explains the extra orange :)

3. Yep. Mine also has those 2 unused connectors.

I'll forgo the Molex connector and solder them together I think.

Thanks for the help and advice.
