You could just use the GI from the backboard to light it consistently . That’s was the next mod I was going to do after I finished the dalek head movement on dr who !

another option is hook GI to an esp32 with wled installed on it. You can set a pin as input on wled then have that run any colours and effects you want for an led or strip inside the tank. wled makes it all easy.
I had that on my pro, green LED strip on inside of lid which I soldered to a GI bulb holder. Double sided Velcro pad to hold tank in place (height has to be just right for when put playfield back into position) and I added a small rubber bumper to the back of the tank at the bottom to angle it up a bit otherwise it points downwards
