I’m a complete numpty when it comes to computery stuff and the last time I asked for advice on here about getting wifi into my pinshack you guys came up trumps, thanks in the end to @russdx1.
I see you can get free ones but I believe there’s no such thing as a free lunch, there’ll be a catch somewhere, how much are they? How do you get them? Pros & cons etc. etc.
And before you lot start, it’s not for facilitating the five finger shuffle. No. As a far right thug, ©️ Sir Kier Starmer, I’d like to keep tabs on how my side’s doing as we hurtle headlong into the dystopian Brave New World that’s looming over us,
TIA, Alan.

I use Private Internet Access (PIA) which was the best a few years ago (stores no log files) but I think NordVPN is widely accepted as the best in the market at the moment - no logs, and fastest (I'd change to NordVPN if I could work up the motivation to sort it out). It's so cheap to get on a paid plan - £2-3 a month, that I'm happy to pay for the performance.

NordVPN is dirt cheap (£65 for two years at the moment), you can use a single subscription on up to 10 devices (PC, phone, tablet, FireTV stick, etc) and is audited by PriceWaterhouseCoopers or the like to attempt to verifiy that it keeps no logs.

It's also fast. You tend to lose a lot of bandwidth with many VPNs, but with Nord I get about 900mbps on a connection that gets 940mbps when the VPN is not running, so only a very slight loss in bandwidth.

Surfshark here. 3 quid a month, unlimited devices and ingogni rolled in. Can be put on my router so works with my, ahem, TV stick.
Installing on the router is interesting, the rubbish selection on UK netflix is infuriating

With PIA here - more because I haven't moved supplier for some time. Proton getting lots of good press.. all good suggestions above tho.. 👍

Erring towards the Nord one. Is it relatively easy to set up, download an app and follow instructions I presume?
Half of my computer interactions go tits up, even simple online purchases so it’s got to be idiot proof,
Ta, Alan.

Cheers Phil. Why would you wanna do that though. My ignorance around IT knows no bounds.
On top of Phil's two uses:

The new UK porn site rules forcing people to register their name/ID before they can access porn. No-one in their right mind will register their name with a porn site: one data breach and the entire browsing history from that site would be available to the highest bidder on the dark web - cases of extortion will go through the roof. But turn on VPN and choose a country without the new ID rule - websites then think you're browsing from there and won't require the registration.

Also, if you're abroad and a streaming site like Netflix or iPlayer won't work because it knows you're outside the UK, just open VPN, select the UK, and the site will work as if you're at home. Similarly, I signed up to TOD.tv today - a North African/Middle Eastern TV provider that shows every Premier League game and all F1 races - for under £11 a month - which is far cheaper than a Sky subscription, but 100% reliable, unlike an illegal stream. But to do that, I had to use a VPN and choose Morocco as my country; otherwise it wouldn't let me set up the account, and the streams just wouldn't play.

My issue with the personal VPN’s we are talking about is that the supplier knows what you do, just like the ISP’s you don’t trust to see what you do. So does the company who do your DNS, if it isn’t your ISP.

And the age checks are a long time coming and will separate society into three groups.
1) Those who happily give their details away, including to porn sites who have a history of not caring about your personal information,
2) Those who find a way to bypass controls
3) Those who get very frustrated. ;)

I considered a group who do not look at porn but I don’t think it is relevant for forum. ;)

Don't think it's been mentioned, but Opera web browser is possibly the simplest free option.

There's a button at the top of the screen 'VPN'. Tap that and then you're using a free VPN. There are options for making it appear as if you're in Europe, USA, Japan etc. Dead simple. And free.

Mullvad for me: https://mullvad.net/en

£4 something a month, they store absolutely no details on you. You cannot have details on file for a reoccurring subscription and your account is a string of numbers with not even an email attached. They only ask for an email once to confirm the account. Up to 5 devices.

If you value privacy I’d really rate them.

Definitely avoid the free ones for long term. For initial testing, I used Winscribe (free) which was pretty good. For years I have used TorGuard. It was highly rated by Tom Sparks (at the time) and you get a reoccurring 50% discount. Unlimited devices also. Pick one that deletes it's logs as not all do. Most give you an affiliate discount code so watch a few YouTube reviews and check their description link. There are rated tables online which are also useful.
