Andy made a good spot with the coil sleeve. It's probably worth you getting a new sleeve.
When it doesn't work, does it seem totally dead or like it's trying? If it's trying it might be the incorrect sleeve and the friction it's causing.
(edit: @drhex has checked since I posted this so maybe disregard, but it's always good to replace sleeves as they cost pennys, it also means you can reassembe the mech and check it's good)
If it's something under playfield it's easily fixed, it's all mechanical or wiring, and I think you can handle it with help. If it's on the boards then that's when I'd suggest an expert.
But you need to establish if it is the board first by changing the coil sleeve and testing the voltage at the coil.
It's not as daunting as it sounds!
