Does anyone on here have trade accounts with magnet trade and/ or howdens please

Looking to establish what sensible discounts are these days as I rarely buy kitchens

Thanks

We have a howdens account discount varies can be up to 60% on certain items like kitchen. Carcasses. Less on door fronts etc. But they are always keen to sell and do a deal. No experience with magnet.

I am just getting prices Carl. I will fit it myself. I buy about 1 kitchen per year for properties that I renovate.

But every time I go through this nonsense of stupid prices, massive discounts. Etc

Howdens is a huge manufacturer with 600 branches in even modest sized towns. Magnet trade has more like 200 branches. Modular kitchens are just commodities (like double glazing), but there is so much aggro in pricing them, and all the wasted time faffing about. The manufacturers obviously try to make this as confusing as possible

I fear that I will have to end up going to b&q , and ikea to get comparator prices to check that i am not being ripped off. I am looking to refurb 2 kitchens plus a utility room this year, so all errors in costings will just get multiplied

Howdens has basically applied a 70% discount across the whole kitchen, whereas Magnet has applied 75% on carcasses with 65% on the door fronts.

The obvious nonsense here is that the difference in price between paying 25% of base and 20% of base is huge

Taking, by means of example, the housing (no door) for a 1.75m integrated fridge (all before vat) ...

Magnet base price £1,039 , 75% discount applied so price to me £260. So £312 inc vat

Howden base price £753 , 70% discount applied so price to me £226. So £272 inc vat

Screwfix sells these things at £240 inc vat

Ikea sells a cabinet including the door for £88 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Inc vat

Magnet, howden, screwfix are rigid, doweled and glued, so ready for installation - whereas the ikea is flat pack

Howdens measure up and do cad design so you get exactly what you need and if a bit is missing or faulty they usually have in stock at local branch, worst case next day, magnet might offer the same not sure, ikea could be a pita should there be a problem and time vs money putting it all together. Also some sweet talking can get you further discounts at Howdens, or maybe I was just lucky, think it was time of year, end of season discounts before new lines came in, something like that, ask them about it...

The Ikea cabinets also used to be non-standard sizes. I've never bought one myself but know someone who was running a few student houses as rentals and it caused them a few issues getting appliances to fit etc. That was 5+ years ago, so they might be standard now, just something to check if you go that route.

@DRD A mate of mine is a kitchen designer for Wickes, have you tried them? I can ask him re: the various quality vs price of the other suppliers but the one thing I do remember him telling me is never buy from Ikea as it's overpriced and poor quality

@ronsplooter thanks for this

Could you put me in touch with your mate pls. If he is vaguely midlands based I would be delighted to buy from him if he quotes a fair price. i have not been to Wickes, so he would not be treading on anyone's toes

Thanks

Thanks Chris. I can make it to Ashby. I just need to shop around as you are dealing with complete snakes in this industry

@Bandit Boy

Thank you for your great suggstion. Your place is a major step in the right direction. I went today. It has a fabulous range, of cabinets and doors, much larger than magnet and howdens. The showroom is about 10x the size of a magnet one. A sample carcass is on display sat alongside those from competitors so you can see that the quality is at least as good as magnet trade and howdens

Taking my tall integrated fridge carcass as a comparator it is £100 inc vat there versus

Magnet 312
Howden 272
Screwfix 240

The ikea thing is much lower quality. A builder I know also says that ikea is also very hard (ie unforgiving in real world conditions)to fit

The guys in there are not very helpful, there is no design service. But the price says it all. There is no expensive branch network employing two designers in each branch, so the overheads of this lot will be massively lower. Also, it does not carry stock - you must wait three weeks for it to be manufactured.

But to save a load of haggling with dishonest folk, I can wait

There is also a perfectly good chippy just round the corner from where you enter the industrial estate.

So are you using them? I'm putting my order in next week, around 4k on units, bought appliances from Currys taking advantage of the Easter sale, got a Neff slide & hide oven for £341.00 after discount codes.
As far as I know there's 10% off at DIY kitchens until the 8th of April.

I also think the design service is poor but then again as you state you ain't paying for salesmen, and it is what it's called..DIY!! lol
After scratching my head I've now got my head around their site and sizes and built up my design which hopefully will fit like a glove. :(

Hi. I am taking the missus there tomorrow to look at the displays. I will then price it all up based on the doors she wants. I have fitted a couple of kitchens in recent years, so I can see that the cabinets, the mechanisms, drawers, hinges etc do seem good at your place

I will then share the resultant price with magnet, howdens, possibly wickes. See where I get to in a brief round of haggling. It is all down to the money for me unfortunately. I like the repeat business, value for money, trust, honesty business model. But these guys just lie to you, try to rip you off, so customer loyalty left the building in this industry years ago

My only reservation with the yorkshire lot is the waiting for elements if you forget to order/ change your mind/ something arrives damaged. At howdens, magnet - they are geared up for this so you can deal with snags very quickly, usually same day.

Oh, @Bandit Boy - my one tip for you would be to think very carefully about the "decor end panels". These are what you attach to visible cabinet sides if you want them to look like your doors. Some cabinets match the doors, so you do not need these panels.

Some kitchens need loads of these and the panels add a lot of time and faff to fitting. They usually need trimming, you have to use a very high quality saw to cut them neatly and cleanly. And you must make sure that you include them in your floor cabinets if you use them on the wall cupboards above so everything lines up correctly.

Hi DRD,
Thanks' for the heads up regards the end panels and keeping bottom and top equal but I'd already sussed it. Wife likes the handleless Luca gloss white, but since adding all the end panels to my plan it's added around £300+ on the price.
Might go for matt....

what about this forum's top poster @replicas - Dazza, you're a kitchen fitter aren't you?
or have i confused you with someone else ...
Correct Dan.
I'm just to far away, plus we use JJO stuff similar price to Howdens but the quality is 50 times better.
Couldn't save Dave anything so stayed quiet.
@carl lawrence is also a kitchen fitter and much closer.
