Thanks Paul100% yes, that has failed. It has vented from the top. Looks like a classic 'capacitor plague' era failure, but it's just coincidence because Data East pinballs are too old to be caught in that nightmare
Also you need to treat surrounding electronics with something to neutralise the acid, just as if you had found exploded batteries. I can see electrolyte on the nearby transistors and ROM chip.
Acid corrosion may take time to cause proper damage, but don't waste any time hesitating here...
Honestly, if you're not planning to do a lot more soldering/desoldering in the future, then the solder sucker is more than adequate. I would suggest using a sucker alongside copper braid for clean up of pads/vias while using the sucker for bulk removal of solder..
I had it in my head that the components and specialist gear would be the last stuff they would want to liquidate. Cheers for the tip.Ive been in Maplin recently, there was 60% off all soldering / desoldering gear, i needed another soldering iron, but they didn't have the exact model i wanted, so I bought a metal detector and a drone, but that is besides the point, they are having closing down sales, everything is at least 50% off.
Oh bloody hell that's a good point. I need to stock up on soldering iron tips for the one I already had....I'm wary of buying anything other than very simple/basic stuff from Maplins given their situation. The warranty will likely be an issue and reportedly they can't even refund stuff that doesn't work out the box.
Popped into a local Maplin yesterday and they had several prominent printed-from-a-computer signs stating that due to the circumstances everything was "sold as seen".
Not sure the legality of that, or whether it's nationwide, but good luck taking a company in administration to court.
I thought Duratool were ok from what I have read on here ?whoever buys it, do a follow up and tell everyone how long it lasted and what problems it had on the way to its demise
twice during temporary moments of insatity, i compulsively bought cheap china soldering irons which I didn't even need,
just as well really as both burned out the first day i used them
I thought Duratool were ok from what I have read on here ?
poo it must be bad lol !!!!!I have one the same or similar, TBH it's crap, always too hot, great for removing solder pads from boards, I no longer use mine and bought a desolder station with built in vacuum pump.
If you want the one I have PM your address and I'll send it to you, I don't want anything for it.
Chris.
