The Synthesizer Thread

R

RobZombie

Seems like there are a few people on here who dabble in synthesis so I thought I'd start a thread for that type of thing. I've really only got into synthesizers this year so I'm a total noob but having a lot of fun with it. I've got a Roland Gaia which I love, and a Moog Theremini. Now thinking about splashing out on a Moog Sub 37. Just wondering if anyone has any experience of the Sub 37 or any other recommendations to consider in that sort of price range?

Also feel free to post all your synthesizer porn right here...

Man, that big blue Buy It Now button combined with the foreboding red Last One Remaining, combined with wine....well, looks like I have a new synth lol

I used to have a nice collection of synths until pinball took over.... Here's a few classics that have come and gone.

Best of those by far... the Elka Synthex.

Quite modest kit these days.... Roland System 8, XP50 and EMU Emax II. Would love to own a Korg Polysix, Monopoly and Jupiter 4 again one day.... Jupiter 8 prices have gone through the roof but the System 8 does a fantastic reproduction.

Awesome :) That is/was a very nice collection. Love the rack too. Yeah, prices on the classic synths seem to be heading the same direction as pinball prices. Which is sort of encouraging in a way.

Not sure what's happening now with my Sub 37 order. Had a load of emails from them this morning to say they had processed my order and taken the payment.....and then another email at 5pm to say they don't have it in stock so it won't be delivered on Tuesday after all WTF?!

Had that before when buying synths, right cnut's trick. They advertise, then only order in stock when they've got a purchase.

Did you shop around before using Ebay? They're not always the cheapest.

Yeah I'm pretty annoyed about that. It wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't promised delivery within 2 working days. Now I don't even know if it'll arrive before xmas. Seems to be the cheapest price online though. 2nd hand ones are selling for not much less.

Managed to get it cancelled...with some effort. Re-ordered from Richtone (who have been amazingly helpful to deal with so far). Arrives tomorrow:)

Ok, finally got it unboxed and cranked up. It's a beautiful piece of craftsmanship without a doubt. Really quite stunning. It's also immediately obvious that it's much much harder to get a usable tune out of than the Gaia. But good grief, how low does that bass go?!

Yes its the Moog Theremini. Tonnes of fun. The kids love it :)

Can you play it ?
I love the sound of a Theremin. I bought a vinyl copy of The Forbidden Planet soundtrack for the Thermin and electronic blips and blops.

Contemporary stuff with a Theremin also floats my boat.

It's actually surprisingly easy to play. Although it depends what sounds you're attempting to get out of it I suppose. I'm using it to make creepy ambient sounds for a VR horror game I'm making. I'd like to get a Waterphone next...

You need one of these. Cheap as chips and great fun. Scares the shît out of kids.

I appear to have bought a rack mount Novation Supernova. Ahh wine. This actual one was used on two Kylie Minogue tracks apparently.

Decent synth the Supernova, needs programming for best results as some of the presets are pants. Nice interface to delve !

I bought (and sold) a Korg MS20ic USB controller recently. It is essentially an MS20 mini case with all the knobs, keys and switches designed to control Korg software synths. What I didn’t know when I bought it was that new iPads can no longer connect to it. :(

Which one are you keeping? I'm totally blind to software synths. Makes my face contort just thinking about it.
I’m keeping my Yamaha AN1X mate.
The rest are going. CZ101, Roland Juno G, Novation Bass Station 2, Kawai K1m, Korg Wavestation.

Might be interested in the Juno G (although I note Grimes has ditched hers for the Gaia, which I love) and Bass Station (although probably not buying another synth for a few weeks at least). Are you planning on listing on here?

Make me an offer for the pair mate.

Man that's a tricky one. Juno G seems to sell for totally random prices. £200 one day, £400 another. Bass Station 2 seems to go for £220 to £240.

You can take them both for £500 and I will throw in the Kawai rack synth.

Sounds like about what I was thinking. How much for the Juno G on its own?

Probably about £300 as it is spotless and has fully expanded memory. It also has the updated firmware so that it has sampling. With the fitted memory it can do huge samples.
It also has all the original paperwork.
The Bass Station 2 is completely mint in its box.
