The Synthesizer Thread

What’s your thoughts on the Korg microkorg? Seems to be a couple for sale local to me. Any good for starting with?

Decent sounds, bit of a pain to program (if you wanted to) and mini keys but there are some real time controllers for filter and stuff. Cheap (I think) so could be a good starter synth until you wanted better keyboard and/or control?

As above, MIDI is used to control synths and other equipment remotely (note on/off, key transpose, pitch/mod control etc.) In software like Cubase for example, you can record midi data into a sequencer so it plays the same thing on every synth connected to it, or different sequences for different synths on up to 16 different channels. For now, you'll likely just use it to control a synth that does not have it's own keyboard... unless you buy a Microkorg that has its own mini one.

FYI, on original 5 pin din midi connections (that you don't have on that pic) you can daisy chain many synths (out to in and thru to in and so on), so what you play on the master keyboard plays on all the synths connected to it too. There's a lot more to it, but there's the basics.

I've dipped my toe into synthesizers and have bought an Akai MPK Mini Play.

My main goal is looping sounds to build up a track, and to recreate/cover songs similar to the video below.

I play the piano so at least have that as a starting point.

The Akai is perfect for what I want, but has to be connected to a PC for looping/recording, currently using MPC Beats. For a newbie this software is quite overwhelming, but I have managed to get some basic looping working.

Anywho, my question is - Is there something similar to the Akai MPK Mini Play that has built in looping/recording?

It must have the following:

Small enough to sit on my lap so I can use it on the sofa

Looping/recording functions

Built in speakers

Reasonably priced

Standalone so I can just power it on and play/loop/record

The cheapest option I've seen is the Yamaha PSS-A50 (£69) but the loop/recorder looks a little basic.

The Yamaha Reface CS (£299) has looping, but the sound choice seems limited and doesn't seem to have any drum options.

Anything else that might be appropriate?

This is the kind of stuff I'm aiming to do. This song is my youth 😊.

Have a look at the Novation Circuit.

The OG ones can be picked up cheap now, run on AA batteries and have a built in speaker.

Once you learn the user interface, they are great for loop recording
