I live near Retford in Nottinghamshire which has a 22,000 population. The mainline station to London has historically helped the town outperform its neighbours economically in an area associated with closed coal mines, closing coal power stations and various economic development initiatives.
A family owned furniture shop going back to the 19th Century closed recently and much of it is now tiny studio flats with front doors leading onto a pay and display car park that also serves adjacent Sports Direct.
Given the amount of vacant shops and the potential for rather more of them - this is probably coming to high streets near you.
