System 80b/Robo-War help needed

I'm sure Jim will respond with the details but when I get some spare time I'll turn all of our back and forth messages where he got me to try different things into a post on this thread as there could be useful info for the future

Ok so Chris doesn't know this yet (a small surprise coming!), but I received his 80b sound board a few days ago to have a look at this crackle fault, after we'd spent a few weeks going back and forth with me suggesting things to try/change to solve it!

So have been spending the last 2 days on this trying to track down this blooming annoying fault. What an absolute PITA this has been!!!

So here it is - > FIXED :) Now need a few beers! and some counciling ;)

Glad it was fixed by Jim - awesomework there mate.
Mind you if all else had failed at least PBR had them for $100 - tho much better to save the original

Poibug

What was it then?

I am interested to know.
Glad it's fixed, got excited initially as I thought the vid would be a fault finding vid

I was out on a road trip today and so didn't have time to reply with an great detail earlier, just to say quickly that a rom swap wasn't the complete solution. I only got back in at 9pm tonight.

The issue was tracked down to a combination of items.

1) A bad or failing DAC ic at E2
2) A bad or failing OP amp at A5
3) A partially corrupt/damaged Sound D1 rom at K2
4) New Tantalum caps at C33 & C34 (possibly not needed for this fault but worth doing anyway)
5) New 1uf non polarised Cap as C37 (possibly not needed for this fault but worth doing anyway)

I am still learning things about this hardware myself, as the music is made from both sides of the sound board with the drum beat part being either created or processed form the sound/speech section. It is interesting as well that if you remove the music rom then the drum beat does not function, even though it appears to be created from the D1 sound rom. Sound effects still function though. Further more if you remove the H1 op amp then the drum beat still functions so it isn't generated from either of the Ay chips.

I am planning to write a much more detailed document on this hardware some day on my site, as there has been a lot learnt from developing my new sound board to.

I hope this helps.

Hello friends,
I received a damaged Robowar. I fixed almost all the problems. The sound card effects work, but the music doesn't. In the videos I reviewed, the LED on the sound card was flashing. But my LED either stays on or off during summer. When it first arrived, the LED was flashing and then it stopped.I removed the oxidation from all connections.I would be grateful if anyone with any ideas regarding this issue could help me out.
Also, the music was constantly playing in a video online. What should I do to fix this?

The led is not really a good sign of a fully working or non working sound board. You need a logic probe and scope to check the signals for all parts of the music generation. Often the faults are caused by multiple failures

Thank you for your interest and response. The machine has effects and other sounds. It's just not music. Is there a way to hear the music? Which signal should I apply to any pin to make the music work?

The two 6502s on the sound card in the machine are getting a bit warm, but not excessively so, which I don't think is normal. I'm guessing one is for background music and the other for effects. Sounds are produced for signals like targets and coin inputs. However, I couldn't access the music. I'd like to check the EPROMs, but I haven't been able to find the original ones. Could anyone share their information with me? This is my first time working with Gottlieb, so I'm a novice with the machine.

Did you read what i said above and how i fixed another robot war sound board?

You need to provide more info and detailed and clear. Its not enough to say 'no music'

Do you have working sound effects? And are they all working or only some of them?
Do you have working speech?
Do you have working drum beat, but no melodies or no music at all?

The sound board is a multiple channel system and yes it has 2 processors. the music is split across both processors so to fix it we need to know what is working and what is not in a detailed way.

The issue is most likely a dac or op amp issue on the analogue output stage if you have some sounds but not all. Its unlikely a processor is dead if you get some sounds (from its section anyway)

Hello again,
The machine is unfamiliar to me and I've never seen it before. I don't know the exact sounds it's supposed to make. However, it does make sounds for falling targets (I don't know if they're the right sounds). With each shot, it says "destroyed three" (when I've shot down three targets), "destroyed two", and then "destroyed one." That's all it says. I'll take a closer look tomorrow, and if I'm lucky, I can find a video online tonight to see what the sounds are supposed to be. Thank you for your interest and help.

So the other thing to know is drum beat or no music at all?
