System 11 stuck on "Factory settings on turn on, until manual override..

Hey,

When I turn my machine on (system 11), the display reads "factory settings" on the DMD, Ive left it for several minutes and nothing changes, I have to open the backbox up, press the CPU switch, and then the game boots up,

Any ideas?

Flat batteries, or possibly a problem with the ram or associated circuitry.

But probably flat batteries!

Going to assume it still has AA batteries on the on-board holder.

Leftover, not fully cleaned out battery corrosion from before may have finally wrought enough damage to make it so that the batteries don't actually supply any of their power to the board anymore, or the battery holder itself. If not just dead batteries as Andy suggests then you're going to need a to have a good, close look at the CPU board, preferably with a multimeter.

The AA batteries are off the board and are brand new

Check the voltage from the batteries is getting on to the board ok, check it's present on both sides of diode d2?

Either the remote battery holder is wired wrong or you have battery corrosion damage on the board, or faulty ram chip.

Thanks, I am on the lookout for a Nvram 6116 which should replace the whole lot in one go, its already socketed, so should be nice and easy,

Did you check if the Ramtron chip is compatible? There’s a thread on Pinside listing compatible machines. You can buy those from UK sellers for around £6. Just make sure you take the board out to install it as it’s really easy to bend the legs into all kinds of wonderful shapes.

Nvram will certainly fix the symptoms, but you also have to consider is that if your batteries are draining too quickly it could be because something else on your MPU is failing or starting to fail. You could be covering up the underlying issue.

6116 is 24 pin, ramtron 1608 is 6264 which is 28 pin - afaik the later systems 11 boards support 28 pin ram (with a jumper change) i guess it just depends on whether the installed socket is 28 pin.

If you have new batteries and there is voltage at the ram chip when off ie not dead batteries or bad connections then you should check the diodes in the vbat circuit. These are to stop the batteries being either charged when the game is on which will destroy them or from trying to power the full board when the game is off which will drain them pretty quick

always find the source of a problem and understand why it happened is my advice as you’ll have a much easier road with solid state Pinball long term

Right, so I removed the whole battery holder, and the external battery holder and soldered a new one external battery holder direct to the board, problem solved it now saves settings and boots up

Now just need to sort out the super loud buzz that goes louder or quieter depending on volume, and the lack of sound/speech

Try making sure all screws are present on the sound board and that they are all tight. It can help a little
