System 11 sound problems

My banzai is only playing parts of its sounds and none of its speech. It withstood a full day of league play last week, the problem developed when i next turned it on. The game is otherwise working normally

I have swapped sound cards and the mpu ribbon cable with my bk2k. I swapped over the sound card roms too, So I know that the banzai sound card works in both games

So at least with bk2k i have a test bed with identical boards so i can swap parts between machines to test things

There are also 2 sound roms on the main banzai mpu board ....

The upper sound rom on the mpu is getting so hot it would almost burn your fingers. I have compared to bk2k, the equivalent rom does not get remotely hot. So something seems wrong

Does anyone have any ideas what is wrong please ? I could swap over the mpu board with bk2k, but i do not want to fry its sound roms if there is a problem with the banzai board

Do failed roms overheat ? Of is the hot rom indicative of a board problem elsewhere?

Do i just get hold of two new sound roms for the mpu board and give them a go ?

Does the Sound diagnostic test give any clues ?


  • CPU Sound Diagnostic Switch SW1.
    On the left side of the CPU board there are two switches. The top switch SW1 is the sound diagnostic switch. If you press this button, you should get two test sounds. This shows that the CVSD (Continuously Variable Slope Delta) modulator, which produces the game's voices, and the DAC (Digital to Analog Converter) sound circuits are working.

    After pressing CPU switch SW1 you should get some tones. Here is the breakdown:
    • No Sound: sound/speech board is not operating, or a failure is affecting the sound circuitry (broken or disconnected cable, dead amplifier, bad speaker).
    • One Tone: U23 RAM chip error.
    • Two Tones: U21 ROM chip error.
    • Three Tones: U22 ROM chip error.
    • Four Tones: U21 ROM chip error.
    • Five Tones: U22 ROM chip error.
 
Have you checked the voltages on the mpu board ?
I once had problem with the sound on my Jokerz and it turned out to be a failing bridge rectifier.

Yup, an abnormally hot IC is drawing more current than it should be. Even if it has not failed, it is failing.

Also measure across your +5v rail to ground (on the soundboard) with your meter set to AC to check for ripple (incase of a psu fault)
 
Is there a good place that lists what the voltages should be at the touching points please?

My mpu board 5v touching point is getting exactly 5v dc. But when i put the meter onto ac it is showing 10.2 v ???

On my power board where it is meant to be + 12v, i get 13.4v dc and 28.7v ac ????

At this point i tested my voltmeter in the wall socket and it gives 250v ac

On my power board where it is meant to be -12v, i get -16.1v dc and 34.9v ac

Thanks for the help guys, this stuff is beyond my experience
 
A cheapo one luke. Is it time for an upgrade ? What do you recommend pls ...

Never heard of that one.

It doesn't sound like you can trust its readings from what you posted above.

Additionally, there is no way that meter has HRC fuses and blast shielding so don't go risking your life by sticking it across 240v mains again :eek:


There is a big different in price between a meter I would recommend, and one that I would call "bare minimum"

If you want the cheapest meter that will do the job. I would buy the best Uni-T meter you are willing to spend money on.

The UT139B is the lowest in the range with true RMS (proper AC voltage measurement)

Do folk trust chinese based ebay sellers ?

I am a scaredy cat so normally only buy from uk sellers. But the chinese seller on luke's link is much cheaper than other folk i have seen

Do you just pay with paypal and rely on that ?
 
Bear in mine that China will also take 4-6 weeks to arrive. Most of the time things arrive fine, but I have done a few paypal claims. If you dont want to risk it go with a UK seller

How would the ripple show up on the meter ?
 
Fixed it.

And was rewarded with a 5 million game including king of the hill. Handy as I had lost my high scores. Took two attempts to hit the jackpot shot

Banzai is just an awesome game it needs full sound

I had a coil lock on the pop bumper. It melted the coil. Which in turn rendered the pop bumpers horrible double leaf switches irrelevant as the plunger was glued in place. These system 11s have awful switches on the pop bumpers. The wpc set up is much better. This cascaded back via fried transistors and in turn fried the game eproms, including the sound eprom. I can only imagine that the sound eprom was getting hot as it was acting like a little 5v hand heater

Andy @pinballmania supplied new eproms and that did the trick. Fantastic service from him and really prompt too
