STTNG Ball Reset Cycle Pre Game

Hi

Complete noobie question but i recently aquired a STTNG table and it has been working really well....but i have a question about the ball rearrangement cycle at the end of each game.

Sometimes it takes ages repeatedly kicking balls from the left VUK and back up the launch habitrail. I counted and it went through 8 cycles which seems strange because of the 6 balls in it. Other times it doesn't seem to run through the cycle at all except dropping a single ball from the left VUK.

This is my first pin and i don't know if this is normal for this machine. Nothing is coming up in the test reports (apart from some battery issues which i will sort). I was concerned this might be an opto issue and how to check which one is duff?

Any help greatly appreciated!

If you have battery problems then that needs resolving first and foremost... check to see if you have battery acid damage as that will always give problems...

This should help a little:

A while since I've had one, but from memory it should load three balls under the playfield, one under each canon and one at the vuk, and on two of those three balls you should hear one of the under playfield diverters engaging to get the ball to the right destination.

It does sound like an opto problem or maybe one of the diverters isn't working.

Do the canons work in gameplay?

Thanks for your suggestions. Andy - the cannons work (left one is sluggish). The issue is intermittent as it behaved last night. Then it came up with check switch 83. I think I will pull up the playfield this weekend and start cleaning etc.

Also thanks for the advice re battery damage. I am also planning to pull the board and check. I am not skilled enough to do the rebuild on it if it is damaged (don't want to make it worse) is there somewhere i can get it replaced or fixed?

I've had similar problems with mine. In my case the first time it was faulty opto's on the trough boards not recognising the balls in the trough. You can test these by doing a switch test via the test menu option and waving a plastic stick between the optical sensors. I had the trough boards and opto's replaced and it solved the problem.

Second time it was the diverter on the subway trail failed so wasn't directing balls to the correct location. If you remove all balls, switch it off then manually place a ball in each of the 2 canon VUKs, one down the left upper VUK then 3 in the ball trough, switch it on and it doesn't start shuffling then I'd wager it's one of the diverters in the subway trail.

Might not be a faukty switch (83) I always found that a tough shot for the borg ship. If you don’t hit it within 30 games I think the machine records this as a fault.

As said I would check the trough optos, the old opto boards suffered with shock which meant the optos worked loose and caused intermittent faults. I would take the opto boards out and check the soldered joints with a magnifying glass to be sure.
