cynically you could say company was lucky to survive after Robocop and the pinball snobs wouldn't touch their games with a barge pole but hey for a long time they were last man standing so Gary must be doing something right. how about a quick poll of your favourite DE-SEGA-STERN . just for fun. looking to Luke to skew the poll with a vote for the wonder that is Torpedo Alley but expect LOTR to win!

my top five
1., LOTR
2. STAR WARS
3. METALLICA
4. PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
5. TOMMY
bottom of the pile. this was a hard choice as torn between this and JP LW and WofF but the winner (loser) is
Striker Extreme

Interesting! I own a JP and love it.
WoF i played at Daventry (it was Gary's I think) and was the one machine we kept coming back to. Great fun.
Robocop is very simple but sounds AMAZING when turned up - "The wrecking crew is here!!!". Great stereo and phase effects. Regret selling that one...

Robocop sold well and saved them tbh . probably why the continued with mostly licensed games. it should have read JPLW ie lost world. I love my JP but couldn't stand lost world

1. Iron Man
2. Avatar LE
3. Metallica
4. TSPP
5. ACDC

1) Torpedo Alley ;)
2) Spiderman
3) Metallica
4) Elvis
5) Galaxy if I am allowed to include old Stern?

To be honest I could probably make a top 30 list of Stern/DE/Sega/Stern, and that's with me only liking one Sega game!

Stern started in 1977 so is it not 39 years of Stern? Or do we not talk about Gary's dad?

AC/DC
TWD
Metallica
LOTR
Spiderman

In their DE incarnation JP
For Sega ID4

Interesting that no one has mentioned Star Trek as of yet.....

this poll would be a lot easier with a list of the contenders :tut:

so here you go - there's these 38 Sterns from 1977 - 1984 http://ipdb.org/search.pl?mfgid=302&sortby=name&searchtype=advanced
and these 41 Data Easts 1986-94 - http://ipdb.org/search.pl?mfgid=98&sortby=name&searchtype=advanced
and then these 22 Segas 1994-99 - http://ipdb.org/search.pl?mfgid=280&sortby=name&searchtype=advanced
and finally these ~40 Sterns from 1999 - present day - http://ipdb.org/search.pl?mfgid=303&sortby=name&searchtype=advanced

moaning over, here's my top 5:

1 LOTR
2 TSPP
3 Sopranos
4 SM
5 BTDK

(6 FG 7 SP 8 POTC 9 ACDC 10 TWD)

In no particular order and trying to cover most of the generations:
  • Seawitch
  • Guns and Roses
  • Tommy
  • Iron Man
  • Lord of the Rings
Honourable mentions go to:
  • Star Gazer
  • DE Star Wars
  • Godzilla
  • AC/DC Premium
  • Metallica
  • Avatar
  • Tron
  • Walking Dead
  • Spiderman
  • X-Men
Stern have made a lot of good games!!!! :D

Yeah agreed, I struggled to narrow it down to 5, only ditched LOTR because I haven't owned it yet!

1 The Walking Dead
2 Spider-Man (TBH I've not played it so just guessing on this one)
3 Metallica
4 Pirates of the Caribbean
5 AC/DC Luci

For DE I like Hook even though mine's given me grief but I put Tales from the Crypt right at the very top.

Indeed!
I really wish Gary Stern would look back at what he achieved in the days of Data East when they were the market innovators (First solid state flippers, first DMD, first stereo sound to name a few) and take some of that in consideration next time he is in a meeting about how many playfield features they can get away with stripping off the latest pro game, and have people still order them
