Oh I didn't know they'd changed the writers. That makes sense now. It is totally different.
Oh dont say that!!! I was hooked by the first season, and then didnt get around to the second, so i need to play catchup......

I completely agree, you won't really miss much of a back story.
Series 3 is so good. It's proper Star Trek and without giving any spoilers ....... the main villain is superbly cast.
We're clearly going to see some proper character arcs too. Bring on the next episode.
On a separate subject I've watched The Last of Us and enjoyed that too.
Apparently it's gone down really badly with people who loved the computer game (I didn't even know it was one). As I understand it the TV show doesn't portray the console characters accurately.
I can appreciate that as a Tolkien fan because Amazon really butchered Middle Earth history with their terrible offering Rings of Power.
Fortunately I'm unburdened by knowing naff all about the last of us game so I'm just enjoying it.
Season 2 is infuriating, because the basic premise/villain could of easily been great!
In fact the series starts of brilliantly (maybe the first 20-30mins I can’t remember now when the villain shows up) but it suddenly takes a monumental handbrake turn in a completely different direction and it’s just a mess!

The previous 2 seasons of Picard have been awful. I couldn't even finish season two it was so bad. The new season is great so far, and reviewers (that also hated the previous two seasons) are saying its a really good full season with consistent quality. A new show runner, who is a proper fan of TNG, and who supposedly had very little interference from the studio or higher ups is in charge and it shows. My only gripes are that the bridge sets continue to be lit very dark and designed more military (I loved the classic TNG bridge), and the swearing (which seems out of place in Trek for me). Enjoying it so far though, and great to see the full cast coming back.

I watched seasons 1 and 2 of Picard and thought they were terrible. Season 1 was a snooze fest but I stayed for season 2, which started well but went down hill rapidly. It actually put me off watching season 3.
However my brother told me S3 is pretty good.
There wasn’t anything on last night so I thought I’d try 1 episode. I ended up binging the 5 episodes last night and what a difference!
It’s like a completely different show. I was never a huge Trekkie but imo this is the best star trek show I’ve watched in years. Roll on episode 6!

Give Strange New Worlds ago mate, as good as Picard season 3 is so far, SNW was even better imo and best trek I’ve watched in years, it washed the bad taste out my mouth left by Discovery.

I’ve been meaning to watch that show as well, but like you said Discovery and Picard S1+2 put me off Star Trek.
