SOLVED - Data East Phantom Of The Opera - slooooooowly lifting flippers

Been working on a Phantom of the Opera. Was having a problem with the PPB board relay and the board had seen better days so bought a new Rotten Dog board (It was the only one in stock).

Was playing OK for a few hours and now the flippers have started playing up! I'm sure the replacement of the PPB board is unrelated to the flipper issue - it's just an unhappy coincidence - because this machine (which is not mine) has had multiple issues over the last couple of years I've been maintaining it. Fix one thing and another thing fails is definitely order of the day with it.

The issue is the flippers are lifting really slowly when the flipper buttons are pressed. Both of them. But right seems to be marginally worse than left. It's like the 9v holding power is being used to pull the plunger in rather than the high voltage.

The flippers are not mechanically catching (and, like I say it's both flippers not just the one). Flipper button switches are good. Fuses on Solid State Flipper Board are good (and fuse clips are tight). Connectors on flipper board re-seated. Transistors on flipper board are testing good.

First time I've encountered this on any machine. Anyone had similar in past and can set me in the right direction as to what to test next please?

Are the eos swtiches closed properly at rest?
Not sure which way round DE are normally open or closed.

Just had exact same on my whirlwind and it was because the eos switches were microscopically open at rest.
 
You got full voltage at the flipper coils?
Doh!

I didn’t even check that. Was short of time when I was there earlier. Will post an update when I get a chance to check later in week.

Almost too embarrassed to admit this but I guess there’s a learning point in there somewhere.

It was a blown fuse!

Because the flippers were working I didn’t even bother checking fuses.

F5 on ppb - high voltage for flippers - it looks like the new Rotten Dog board came fitted with 5A fast-blo when it should have been slo-blo.
