If I want to carry out repairs to my CPU board what type of soldering iron do I need?
Paul

Hi Pastiche,

I am not a soldering expert, but I believe the minimum you need is one with a variable tempreture and small tip.

I'm sure others will have more comments.

Cheers, Mark

That makes sense. I have noticed that they come in different temperature settings, so what is best for circuit boards?

No offence intended, but if you are new to PCB repair, please please please please do not just have a go at working on a pinball board. So many pinball boards are expensive and/or irreplaceable

Learning to solder takes months to years of experience.

I get so many boards sent to me where someone has "had a go" themselves and then I have to repair damaged thru holes and tracks.

You absolutely definitely MUST practice several times on a scrap PCB before you attempt the real thing

Thanks for posting the link Pete, Yes that's the baby. A few people brought them and were very impressed.

Hi Lukewells,
That sounds like good advice as I don't want to cause even more problems.
Would you be willing to give me a quote to have a look at my board to see if you can repair it?
Paul

That is the same looking soldering iron as I have so I will 3rd the recommendation.
Amazing how expensive a desoldering station is but I am beginning to realise it is a requirement if you start to do a lot.

I was very lucky to have a nice local chap who gave me an old fruit machine board to practice a few things on. If anything, I was too timid when I started and that allowed me to test how much is too much. I still don't get it right every time .

Oooh, you bugger Paul. I wasn't really in the market for one but at that price i'm sorely tempted.

Edit: Aaaand ordered. I'm stuck in Denmark right now but handily I can reserve via click and collect and go to pick it up when I get back tomorrow.
