Complete Roadshed

Another Roadshow restore, this one is in similar condition to Scotts. As everyone is likely sick of seeing Roadshow restores i will try to add all the costs so anyone attempting a restore in the future will get a ballpark figure on outlay. I will also try to keep the machine as original as possible with the exception of leds and plastic protectors. Any comments advise will be appreciated, if you think i have missed anything or made a b@#@cks of anything let me know. Ok so costs the machine was 2500 and here it is (it did come with a backglass/translite which is fine.

This one is pretty mouldy, it had been in unheated/unventilated storage for about 30 years



Its also pretty rusty, however the cab is in good shape and i am definitely keeping it as is

I have started to remove some of the underside but here is a preview, its grotty and unfortunately some 90% of the screws are shearing, also a cab shot for your delectation



you can see everything in contact with the playfield has corroded



The cab is pretty nasty internally too

Yes I wore a mask, it is really grim. I am going to (i have actually finished it so this log will be pretty quick) keep it as original as possible, I quite like the cabinet not being perfect as it reminds me of the arcade days, that said I would re-decal it if it was faded and i am keeping the ashtray I am also going to keep as many components as possible although the mechs etc have a serious amount of rust, it will defo not be up to your standard of restore Ant but hopefully will end up a nice example of the machine.

Stripped all the metal parts off and popped them in the tumbler



also polished the rails



Removed the flaking paint from the coin door and apron

Yes about 90% of them, I tried tapping them before unscrewing etc but nothing worked

The playfield is defo goosed due to the amount of sheared screws





Also the bulb holders and switch mounts are also pretty far gone


As luck would have it a fellow pinball info member alerted me to a playfield on ebay which i won for 118, so i am really chuffed with that as a new repro would be nearer 1000



Cleaned using very fine finishing paper, waxed and it looks great

Wow - when you add in the “cost” of your many hours of time it shows that restoration from the dead is absolutely not economically worth it in the current market!

All the bits are out of the tumbler Red and Ted are back together and the new second hand playfield is on the rotisserie

Apron and shooter covers stripped, respray and new decals



About ready now for re-assembly. Its got to be said the prep of all the parts is hugely time consuming

Started the playfield rebuild, the wood siderails on the original playfield couldn't be removed due to the sheared screws so made two new ones the back upright with the flashers neede3d stripping and re-spraying





Cols plastic protectors installed, i really like these



Reconnecting the harness, this is not as difficult as I imagined as long as you label it correctly

On to the cabinet, as i mentioned i am happy with it condition wise so keeping it as is



The inside however is grim



Bit of cleaning sanding and undercoating its starting to look a whole lot better



Cleaned transformer, shaker and mains stuff re braided and put back together



Backbox had same treatment plus cleaned ground plate and clear coated




Coin door stripped and resprayed

The Cabinet had an astray installed which i thought i would keep. For a bit of nostalgia i popped a joke cigarette in it, filled it with resin and backlight it.

On the home straight now, fitted playfield plus backbox and fired it up !



So a few switches required adjustment but the big issue was an error relating to the DCS sound board interface, read a bit on pin wiki and it suggested the rom so i downloaded it from ipdb re burnt it and the error disappeared, thought i had cracked it but no, i get bongs but zero music or effects, after a lot of buggering about i sent it to Jim @myPinballs who fixed it and returned it in a matter of days Thanks Jim . He said it was a difficult fault to diagnose so i don't feel too stupid (unless he said that to make me feel better)

Also had to change the DMD thanks Jason Catrine

Anyway after a few switch adjustments etc its complete

That's useful for people to know, it costs a lot to restore a machine, you lucked out with the playfield otherwise £4900

I don't think it's been worth it for a while, it's definitely a labour of love. Just put it down to 120 dominos pizza orders, 28 dominos pizza for parts.

I did think about putting a red led in the end but only after I filled it with resin
