I have a coin door thats a bit of a mess. it it worth restoring? not sure what needs to be done as im new to this, does it need sand blasting / powder coating?
Is it worth the time / expense or should i just get a new one?
It depends where you live. Powder coaters are in most towns and cities, so maybe pick one close to you? A quick Google should help. I'm South Warwickshire so would recommend MRK at www.mrkservices.co.uk (that's who did the one I've pictured).
Satin Black is pretty bog standard at any powder coater.
I'd recommend throwing everything in that needs the same coating at the same time - eg bolts, backbox hinges, brackets, etc - as the cost doesn't seem to increase too much at these volumes - once setup is done.
Personal I would not bother with that coin door as it looks like the wrong type , buy a new one or a good second hand one , put up a wanted thread and see if one drops in your lap !!
Looking at yours I’d buy a new or second hand door. It wouldn’t be worth the time or effort(or cash) to sort it. I’m taking a couple to powder coaters tomorrow, I’ll post what it costs to get someone else to refurb it!
That coin door of yours is not worth spending big money on. It does not look "right", perhaps it was salvaged from a video game and put on your machine in the past by an operator.
In your shoes I would either:
1. Replace with an authentic one slot wpc era coin door - don't be afraid of buying a rough one.
Or
2. Have a go a refurbing what you have.
Painted coin doors respond really well to a refurb. You literally get your best bang for your buck out of refurbing a painted coin door versus any other cosmetic pinball repair. Cheap and great results are very achievable, even for the first timer.
Take lots of photos when you dismantle it. Remove the electronics and gubbins from the back. Strip paint with a revolving wire brush on an electric drill. Black hammerite aerosol paint with hammered finish, not the smooth version.
Cost wise I’ve just come back from powder coaters. Coin door and frame, 4 legs , lockdown bar, side rails, backbox hinges, shooter rod housing, speaker panel plus several bolt heads £65 and that’s including £15 extra for ‘sparkly’. I’d still suggest finding another door first though....
Certainly check various powdercoaters. I had legs, shooter, side armour and lock down bar done. First 1 quoted £120!! In the end, my local guy did it for £40 (+£5 as I wanted 2 colours doing).
I've just also spray-painted a coin door using Hammerite Hammer finish. Really easy to do, and only cost £10.89!
