Real World Tyre Recommendation

Threshold braking (braking just to the absolute limit of locking the tyres, or lifting off a bit if they do skid) is going to outperform a lot of ABS systems.

Problem is that it's a skilled action to perform - not only are most drivers not budding circuit enthusiasts, you've also got to be able to perform it - and remember to perform it - when you've just about shat yourself in a surprise situation in daily traffic.

If you had Data from Star Trek driving the car maybe... but LOL that's an understatement! even the best drivers in the world lock their wheels.

Most folks don't brake properly at all. When we run driver training the first hour is spent training drivers to brake properly. They all moan like hell about it at the start but at the end of the day they are all thankful for that slot. So theoretically it might outperform but in practise its simply not possible.

Twice now people have quoted me to agree with me in different words!

Common problem with car forums - loads of people thinking they're temporarily embarrassed F1 drivers just waiting for their phone call and posting the first line of my post without my post second line that reminds just how far the word 'theoretically' can be pulled.
And even then that's assuming the oldest/cheapest/****tiest ABS systems out there, versus a very, very skilled driver. It's even more silly if you talk modern systems.

Cheapest place for these seemed to be Kwik Fit at £128 a corner all in. Same price whether you visit the depot or have a mobile fitter. 20191211_132655.jpg

Out of sheer principle I wouldn't give my patronage to those guys. A local, smaller fitter might give you a better price in person - and even if they are short somewhat I would support a mechanic I could better trust for repairs I didn't want to take on myself.

But each to their own.

I totally agree with the above sentiments. I tried my local guy. A properly trained mechanic, operating out of a real cheapo building.

However he could not get these tyres this side of Christmas. I have been caught out like this before. Winter tyres can sell out real quick at the first sign of snow.

That's a good point tbh. May not be a choice if you don't buy in advance for adverse-weather tires.
