Printer/ Sheet Fed Scanner For Home Office

I have had an HP Officejet Pro 9600 plus for 13 years and it has been an excellent all-rounder. The inks are relatively expensive at around £100 a year, with me using maybe 2500 sheets pa

It is now unreliable with an intermittent fault.

1. Are these things fixable - or is basically time to retire it ?

2. What is a suitable colour or black+white duplex replacement pls ?

After going through what felt like an inkjet a year I moved to colour laser and never looked back.

I've got hp colour laserjet M553 which doesnt have wireless printing but it looks like there are wireless models now available, and multifunction too, at no money on amazon.

Just check duplex option on the wireless models as it seems to be a bit more business oriented option.

I actually bought mine as a refurb and it's been fine for approx 5y now, and that's with afternarket toners too.

I got fed up with inks drying up on anything inkjet as printing i tend to do in fits and starts... very little for a few weeks, and then loads...

I ended up with a Brother MFC-L8690CDW. Generic replacement toners are cheap (under £60 for a complete set of colours), Multi-sheet feeder on the top allowing for scanning (single/double sided). Wireless printing and network (rj45) connectivity, as well as fax (does anyone use Fax any more)??

Are they fixable - yes. I would have a dig on youtube etc for common issues. Failing that, i found that printers are relatively disposable nowadays, like most other things.

My wife’s a teacher and our printer gets used constantly. Had B&W laser, then colour Laser that all ended up in landfill as repairs > cost new

Get yourself an Epson ecotank. Genuine ink is £30-40 for full colour and 2x black. They are genuinely brilliant.

Ours has been running for 5 hard years without fault.

I would never buy HP. The try to lock you in and stop 3rd party inks.

I've used a Canon PIXMA MG6150 for years. Absolutely fantastic and perfect photo prints. It started failing recently (the internal ink tray fills up and a major issue to change) but with well over 10 years of use and never having to change it, it is not a massive issue. You can keep it going by partial cleaning it, which I di, but that's another story. I buy my ink from ebay, 4 x (5) sets of colours for less than £20 an absolute bargain. Never had any problems with 3rd party inks.

I have recently bought a Canon TR7650 as it does all that my previous one did plus duplexing which was a must. I was originally going to buy an Epson but went to have a look at one and didn't like it. I also considered ink tank printers but I'm not a heavy user so steered away from that. Ink tank printers have a lot of problems and maintenance which most people don't realise.

i have an old hp lasertet 4300dtn (or something like that) was an old one work were scrapping about 10 years ago, does colour and duplex, on my second set of toners now but still no issues other than the odd double paper feed which is more the paper storage than anything

It's physically small and seems to do what I am after. 5 yr warranty, duplex, auto doc feed. Over the warranty period the £326 outlay is less than I am currently paying for ink cartridges. Plus genuine 7500 sheet refills are only about £30 for a set.

This is the white plastic version of the black et-4850 but is £70 cheaper. So much for wacko jacko .....

I have found my eco tank to be a very good purchase. Epson have reliable apps to print from phone and workstations and the ink refills are well thought out and cheaper.
