Player 1 display shows "05" on Bally Vector

On my Bally Vector after the self-tests have completed at power-up, the Player 1 display shows "05" whereas the other three score displays show "00". Is there any significance to this? Can't find anything in the manual although they can tend to be a bit cryptic. After a game has been played the display alternates between the last game's score and the high-score-to-date.

Also, should the "SHOOT AGAIN" insert be lit during a ball saver (current options mean that if the ball drains without scoring it is returned to shooter lane for manual re-launch)? The light is working as it flashes during the test mode, but I've not seen it ever work in gameplay. It's quite easy to score zero on Vector as the ball goes round the figure-of-eight shooter lane orbit and straight back down the hole from the right ramp!

It's got custom software installed.

Yes, top info! Thanks, Andy.

You know, I did wonder about that in the back of my mind for two reasons. Firstly, I noticed the ROM chips looked a bit shiny and one of them had a "V5" mark which matches the number on the display, and secondly, there are a few jumper wires here and there on the MPU that my Paragon doesn't have (both machines use the -35 MPU so should be identical).

I'll have to have the MPU out on the workbench and have a closer inspection at the mods.

Does Phil Dixon frequent these pages? I believe he owned/service the pin for the guy who owned it before me. Maybe he knows some history?

Phils not here. He's Stuck in ukpinballland.
The jumpers are different for the combination and type of EPROMs used.

I'll work it out. That website you linked is retro goldmine of information! The webpages are truly awful - very dated like it's 1992 again - but the information is excellent. I've come across it before (I think because of the Paragon playfield swap). Where did he get all his NOS playfields from?!?!?!

Well worth bookmarking for future reference: http://www.pinball4you.ch/okaegi/index.html

I have Phil as a friend of a friend on Facebook (I also use ukpinball a bit) so I'll try and get him via those channels.

Thanks again, Andy!

Bit late I no but 05 in display means you have a free play chip installed

Better late than never!

Turns out this "Version / 5" home update has some very cool features. For the complete specs see http://www.pinball4you.ch/okaegi/pro_softvector.html.

First up is a skill shot on the shooter launch: try to get the star rollover on the upper playfield before any other scoring activity. At first I found this fairly easy - just hold the right flippers up immediately after launch and the ball will occasionally bounce across - but since I've fitted the correct 2-inch EM-style mini-flipper up top (the game's designer, Greg Kmiec, confirmed it should be a small flipper. See http://www.ipdb.org/machine.cgi?id=2723) it's got a whole lot harder!

Next up in the changes is the incorporation of 6 unused speech samples from the sound card:
  • "[1,2,3] Captured!"
  • "Strategy Changed"
  • "Welcome to Vectordome!"
  • "Double Vectorscan Value"
  • "Triple Vectorscan Value"
  • "Period Complete!"
The update also changes around the use of some of the existing speech samples. There is also a change to the bonus sequence of the star rollover.

All-in-all pretty sweet!

When I had my Vector , I think the "shoot again " is a extra ball.
Go into test and change the setting !
You really need the manual to find which one it is , it's the holly Grail on theses old birds!!!

Ok, I've got an original manual. It's just such an awful piece of technical documentation. Plus I have to factor in an extra layer of complexity because the custom ROM has modified the meaning of several DIP switches.

When I've got it all mapped out I'll document it on line in an easy to understand settings table and diagram!

Also there is something to do with high score if there are set to,Zero ,then the shoot again will not work!!

Have a similar prop with my medusa !!! The diference is I need to take of the "exteneded play" (extra ball)
Off for the next meet ,next Sunday !!!

Aaahhh!!!!
