Naples is astonishingly good value for money. Parts of the City are a bit grotty - hence why it is so cheap - but it makes an incredible base for exploring the surrounding area by (dirt cheap) public transport.

Stay in Vomero district (central but uphill via one of three funiculars, away from the cruise ships/ old town/ Italian chaos/ moped madness)

The awful airlines fly here - Easyjet, Ryanair etc

A cappuccino with sparkling water on the side is 1.5 eur
The best pizza on earth is 5 eur

Masses of Roman ruins, everywhere
Pompeii and Herculaneum are a small part of it
Home of Roman Med fleet
Big ferries all over Med
Little ferries to local volcanic islands
Underground is 1.10 eur a ride
Amalfi Coast (Talented Mr Ripley) by train or ferry
Volcanic stuff - Vesuvius, heated pools, spas
Beaches
FC Napoli
Nerdy railways like funiculars
High speed trains to Rome and other major cities
Biggest stately home in Europe
Steep hills/ mountains to walk up
Arguably the most beautiful opera house in Europe

Nerd fact...

There are some pizzerias in Naples that only serve two types - Marinara pizza (tomato, olive oil, garlic, basil) or Margarita pizza (tomato, fior di latte cheese, olive oil, basil). Others do masses of varieties.

Globally - Marinara pizza = seafood. Even the islands off the coast of Naples, Marinara = seafood.

Agreed 100%.

I was there last year with my wife. She is coeliac so cannot tolerate any gluten whatsoever. Italy and in particular Naples was fabulous for her as so many restaurants catered for coeliacs. Apparently it is common amongst Italians and Italians udt can't live without their pasta and pizza. There was even a gluten free cake shop which was amazing for her.
