Occasionally at antiques fairs but they tend to be non workers. Most of them are owned within the community now.
Your best bet is going to a show. Always a few with "For Sale" stickers on and you can get as much playtesting in as you like 
Seen a few antiques dealers trying to get like £2000 for a knackered non-working £100 EM. Makes for a good giggle.
Completely agree, not only will you be able to play test it but also likely talk with the person selling but the seller will also avoid crappy auction sellers fees, real auction fees are often even worse than eBay onesYour best bet is going to a show. In 28 years ive had 2 machines from general auctions and 1 from a storage unit. Went to a few liquidation operator auctions in the 90s but they had no pinball but did fill van loads of fruits and videos for peanuts. £13 for centipede anyone? Then of course the Bob Thomson auctions. Elephant house is only auction room in UK to have specialist arcade sales but prices can be higher than eBay. Great place to sell though.
They occasionally pop up at auction houses - and are usually over valued non working EMs
With all markets there is a normal way to buy stuff (ie this forum, at pinball events, on eBay) and there is an "off piste" way - antique shops, small ads, random auction houses
The problem with going off piste is that you may get a screaming bargain. But more likely you will waste lots of time dealing with folk who think that because a CV is worth a few grand their totally knackered Harlem globetrotters is worth even more because it is older.
