Hi all,
Im looking for some help with a pn2dmd display in a Star Wars data east.
I have set the display to data east/sega. uploaded the files to the memory card but nothing happens. I’m rubbish at technical stuff and computers.
would anyone be able to help me out? I can show what I have on the card with files so wonder if I’m missing something. The display has been used before by another member so I know it was working on a different machine.

Im stuck mow so please help if you can.

Thanks
steve

The ribbon cable is connected and in the right way?

The ribbon cable carries the data, so that could explain the static screen.

Hi Stevelooks like it's powered properly. With just the PIN2DMD logo showing suggests no data is being received at your display.

Make sure the ribbon cable is connected firmly at both ends and that the red side of the ribbon is on pin1 of the display input and the game output

I wouldn't worry too much about display settings as it's normally all auto config.

This is a useful link - but I think you have the vast amount covered

Thanks for the replies.
Ribbon cable is correct as double checked. Here are the files I have on sd card. Maybe they are not the correct files.
Looks like the dmd is also registered as has key on screen and was used by original owner.
Thanks

The files are not the problem either Steve. You can run the display in single colour without any files installed.

unfortunately there isn’t any data getting to the processor on your PIN2DMD panel.

This is either a hardware fault on the display between data arriving on the input and the processor - or most common a ribbon cable problem - but you’ve checked that.

Double check the display controller board is ok by installing your original display. Pay careful attention to how the ribbon connector is oriented if it works.

If you have another pin - try installing this problem PIN2DMD display in that machine

Thanks again for the replies. I will go and check a few things today and repro Ty back later today after work or tomorrow.
Thanks guys looking forward to getting this running.

Just for the record, if I instal the display in my fish tales and transfer the sim from that one can I put the sim into this display and it should work to test?

Thanks

When you say Sim - you mean SD card right?

Again you don’t need any files installed to get the display to work. It will run in a single colour mode. The files are provided to give information on how to colour specific scenes the display animate - so no files just a simple single colour animation.

So pop the display into your fish tales and see if it runs. If it does you know you have a working display. If not - you probably have a problem with the display.

Most critical thing is to get the ribbon cable the right way around.

About two years ago I fitted a pin2dmd in a Data east Star Wars. Now keep in mind, I have been using pin2dmd in pinballs and vpins maybe longer than others on here.

I had two in stock, one supplied by @MadNat on his first run. The other purchased from somewhere else online.

One of them did exactly what yours has done. I was turning the enhancer on and off, and messing with firmware as well. It just would not work.

Fitted the one done by Mike and it fired up first time.

I then fitted the 'non working' one into a Bally Attack from Mars and it worked perfectly......

I can provide no reason for this at all.

Phil

Just fitted my pin2dmd from @MadNat (Thanks) into my de Star Wars last week and had the same problem. The dmd driver board I had fitted was slightly faulty and needed a washer under one fix point to make it work properly, had been like this for a year and worked previously with the standard screen. I had to swap another display board in the end to make the Pin2dmd work, so what I’m saying is there may be a fault with your dmd driver board that the standard display can cope with but not the Pin2dmd. Also try the reset to factory option on the display and select data east again.

Thanks everyone for the replies and help.
It turns out the display is fine and so are the files.
After checking the cables many times it seems my lazy eye has let me down again.

In fact the only issue was I had the ribbon cable in back to front after checking 3 times I still had it wrong!!!!

Turned it the correct way and now I have a fully working display.
All my fault🤣🤣🤣

Thanks to everyone for their help with this and advice. So into the next display I’m scared stiff.

Thanks
Steve

Hi all, sorry to ask but i need a little help again please.
dmd all worming now with Star Wars.
when In game mode there does not Seem to be many colours on the display just 3 or 4. On YouTube the Star Wars pin2dmd has lots of multi colours. Am I missing something maybe in the setup menu or do I need different files?
I will attach a short video of what mine is doing.

Yeah that’s not right.

I think mine did that when I first installed it. I think I just did a reset on it - think there is an option in the menus somewhere…. and it sorted itself out.

Your rgb sequence looks wrong in the pic, not sure if sega/data east is different but the colours on the bar above the logo should be reds left and yellows to the right

This is a very good call.

Also make sure you have the latest version of the colour files - here is a link to those kindly created by MartDes

Hi, thanks for the reply.
I will try and see how to reset it tonight and see if it makes a difference.

Thanks

Thanks for the replies. How would I change the rgb sequence?

Thanks

Here is a video of what I’m getting in gameplay.
Does anyone have a different colour scheme on theirs?
Thanks
Steve

Yes mine looks just like above and in the instructions for dummies.
Still plays the same .
Does anyone have video of their display with a pin2dmd and Star Wars DE?
Thanks
This is driving me mad.
Maybe I have the wrong colour files

If its the same then I would check the cables are in correctly, the files and try a different sd card

I checked cables and all seem ok.
I will try swopping the dmd with my fish tales pin2dmd in the week.
The files I have for the Star Wars are these so not sure if it’s the most upto date as a friend helped me do it as it good on computers.
Maybe I should I try different files?

Thanks again for the advice

Watching your video, defo no colourisation is being loaded only a single 4 colour palette (red + blue + white + black) is in use. This palette could be the default from the .pal file on your SD card or from the DMD which is set multi colour. Do you see the same colours if the DMD is powered up with SD card removed?

In either case, I'd recommend downloading the colourisation files madnat linked above and copy them to the top level of an SD card to try.

Good luck, it will be obvious once the colour files are applied properly and goodness will prevail :D

Thanks again for all the help and ideas.
I’m away now for a couple of days so will try in the week when I return.

Thanks for the advice.

Steve

Ok an update.
All is working now as it should. I must be stupid as spent a long time checking everything that was suggested. Needed up being I had not put the memory card back in after checking the files many times!!!🤣🤣🤣
All working perfect now.
Thanks
