Piano wire size to make ball gate

I need to make one of these for my FG.

Made them before from piano wire - but what diameter is best ?

Have to make 'number 12'. I have the top part. Just missing the gate.

I prefer to use stainless steel welding rod. I believe the correct size is 1/16"

Yep as above. You just need a stainless tig filler rod 1/16" / 1.6mm I'm sure if you visited a local fabrication workshop and asked nicely they'd give you a few

Yes that's the stuff, but £4.49 for 10x 1.6mm 308 filler rods is VERY expensive

Yeah that's the problem. Its expensive for what they are, but on the other hand you will be able to make loads of wire gates out of 10 rods. If you were local to me then i'd just give you some

Welding rod is better. Must be stainless though.

Just noticed they are only 333mm long! a full length rod is 1000mm, so they have cut them up into 3rds meaning you are only really getting 3.3 full welding rods for your money

Yes it is shiny. Spring steel (the one you linked to) can rust and tarnish. Stainless welding rod will look like new forever.
