Noob Side Armour Question

Hi there,

I'm going to strip the legs and lockdown bar off my R&B so I can take them along to the local shot blasting and powder coating place to get a price (in fact i'll most likely just remove 1 leg as I figure that will be sufficient for them to quote a price).

Whilst i'm at it I figure I might as well remove one side of the side armour and get a price for that too.

Now here's where i'm a little confused.

Is the side armour just a metal overlay? Is there a plastic channel below it that actually holds the glass in place?

When it comes to removing the side armour is it usual for it to feel like it's been glued on? I've removed the bolt at the front and a screw from the rear and there doesn't seem to be anything else holding it in place but it feels like it's got some adhesive on it; or maybe it just sticks because it's been on for so long?

I'm assuming i'll need to strip out the flipper buttons to get it off too but i'm not sure how those are held in place. Any clues on that one?

And finally i'm assuming to fully remove the side armour i'll have to undo the brackets holding the head in place so I can lift the armour clear.

Lots of questions see - but figured best to ask before I start taking it to bits. ;)

They are normally held on with a kind of 3M double sided tape. Flipper buttons come off easy they have a nut on the inside of the can just undo and pop it out

Side rails are fixed in place with double-sided tape. To remove you will have to slide a sharp blade underneath and work it up til it comes free. Not an easy job and even harder to get them off without bending them.

I've just taken some bits into the powder coaters - 2 x siderails, 2 x back box hinges, and 1 x lockdown bar. £45 the lot and 3 day turnround which should be ready tomorrow.

Thanks for the comments guys. Might give this a go on Sunday. Sounds like softly softly is the way to go and plenty of patience.

From the sounds of it £100 should cover the lot but i'd rather have a quote so I know what i'm looking at.

That's cheaper than I expected. Any idea how much the same would be to have chromed? I'd guess there would be more prep work for chroming, any imperfections would show up otherwise.

Got one of the rails off so will take it, along with the other bits, down to the coaters tomorrow to see how much. Turns out there are two in town so i'll get prices from both.

In a related question - how are the channels that hold the glass actually held in place? They seem to be inserted into a groove in the sides of the cabinet but do they usually adhere them in place or are they just held in place through friction?

Mine are a bit battered and although not critical i'll most likely replace them at some point so it would be handy to know the best way to remove the old ones.

They are held in by staples. Usually about 5/6 each side. If you have a rail off you should be able to see them.

This is a Data East table Steve - I think it's slightly different.

I think I spotted the staples in the pictures on your TOTAN thread but no such staples on mine.

Oops, didn't spot that!

Surprised they used a different method though, have you tried to remove them?

I started lifting the front and it does feel like it's just friction holding them in.

I have a feeling that if I buy new guides then they may well give me the clue I need so i'm not going to fret about it too much. If anyone does have a definitive answer though it would be nice to know in advance. :)

Edit: There's a picture of the trim here http://www.marcospecialties.com/pinball-parts/545-5017-00 and it looks like there's a nodule on the bottom vane which could well explain how it's held in place. Hmmmm.

I decided to bite the bullet tonight and had a bit of a fiddle with the glass channels on the sides of the cab. They are just held in place by friction. The right one popped out easily whilst the one on the left took a little more persuasion.

Got them both out now so need to find a supplier in the UK.

That looks exactly like the B/W part, same profile and everything? It even says can be used on B/W games so i reckon it's the same. Andy deffo has these as I bought a pair from him at the Pinball Party.

Thanks Steve. I figured it was worth dropping Andy a line anyway as I know he doesn't list all the bits he sells on his site.

Seconded - I'm sure I saw some of these available from Europe somewhere... However these could do with a uk stockist as I owe replicas a set :D
